Is it normal my is it normal thumbing abilities are broken?

I've been a is it normal user for more than a year and have the option to thumb comments up or down. Today I noticed that when I refresh the page after giving a thumbs up / down the whole thing resets itself and looks like I didn't give any thumbs at all. Am I the only one with this problem?

Firstly, thank you for fixing the issue with the spammer who kept making new accounts. There are others who have taken her place, but not to the same degree. They seem manageable for now.

Secondly, while you have been prompt with answering my feedback, I have heard from other users that they often hear nothing back. As you can imagine, this leads people to believe that feedback is useless. I know you're busy; I think many people who are regular users of the site are aware of the time and budget constraints, but there really is a degree of apathy around trying to get anything checked/fixed. These problems I'm listing might not seem much individually, but piled together, it gets so frustrating trying to use the site.

Here goes :/ In no particular order after the first point, because what's more important to some is probably not to others. The first point does, however, seem to be a major problem by general consensus.

        1. Moderation is still very hit and miss. Many people comment on posts that they are amazed to see these posts getting through - and there are several that we see in unmod that are much more valid/interesting that get deleted. This has been a problem for the past year at least. I have been meaning to take note of each so I could give you examples but I've not had the time. I'll try to get around to it.

        * People who do nothing but spam and abuse are allowed to remain.

        * You have said that underage users who admit to being banned are banned - yet their stories go through moderation anyway? Not such a huge problem, but it does make it appear like it's not being addressed. I'll also be sending you via feedback the name of a user who has posted stories (which fortunately didn't pass moderation) claiming to be a 9 year old molesting a 5 year old (subsequently recanting and claiming to be 14) who has still not been banned.

        * It has been seen that there are stories and polls that will be rejected for no apparent reason when posted by certain users, and then when submitted, as an exact copy, by other users, they have passed through quickly.

        * In addition to the thumb up/down problem mentioned by the OP, if you accidentally hit thumb up/down incorrectly on a touchscreen device, doesn't seem to be reversible. I've seen a few instances of people complaining about this.

          * chat has been very unstable, posts will not arrive at all, will repeat several times, will arrive several minutes after they've been posted. Refreshing the page doesn't change this. This seems to be happening on both mobile and desktop sites.

          * changing display pictures isn't working on mobile site on phones - also won't display pics that have been changed on desktop devices. When checked they have reverted. I have heard this from three other users.

          * notices recur from weeks/months before.

          * notices are incorrect - will say that there are some when none - seems to be just mobile site, unsure of desktop status.

          * posting comments on mobile site has three glitches that I know of a) as Counterfeit.Circus said, it posts on the wrong poll or story (though it's not limited to unmod) b) some will post multiples of comments/stories/polls (more bizarrely, there have been occasions where multiples of the exact same stories/polls have been passed through moderation) and c) sometimes it just doesn't post and you have to refresh several times. I'm not sure this is related to the site or possibly internet connection?

          * there is an abuse of the delete feature. I assume that OP's being allowed to delete on their own stories and polls is to help keep the moderators work focused on the tasks they already have. However, there are many who delete merely to annoy or to skew the comments. Oddly enough, people who put time and thought into this community find this frustrating to deal with. Deleting your own comments is one thing, but deleting those of others (unless genuinely hateful/distasteful etc) is an issue. I understand that it isn't as simple as removing the feature all together, but perhaps it could be on an incentive system or something...if someone is found to be regularly deleting comments for no readily apparent valid reason, it could be restricted temporarily?

          * I find it puzzling that there is no link between reporting comments and any given user whose comments are repeatedly reported by multiple users (and it seems you can follow who is abusing this by using multiple accounts?) being cautioned or banned. I realise that this can be abused through multiple accounts or used just because someone is trolling or dislikes someone, but there are (I like to hope) more people on here that behave honestly than there are who behave like that.

          * moderation of comments. Two points a) links in posts can take a week or so to get through. I'd go so far as to say these should be high if not top priority in moderation? and b) an open list (or at least guidelines) of what words are censored or moderated would be nice because some things are genuinely incomprehensible as to why they don't appear - particularly when posts about bestiality and other illegal activities are allowed past moderation with no problem (contradictory to terms of service which states not to talk about illegal activity). Perhaps a list at sign up or in the FAQ? If it's left unknown, it leads to guesswork and hearsay.

          * I know one person has been billed for recurring subscription for an account they weren't using for a year or so. While I'm aware it is our responsibility, not yours, to monitor our own payments, it would be nice to have an option to take a subscription in blocks, similar to the options for gifting.

          * changing the order of billing blocks for gifting gold so that 12mths is not the default would be nice. I've been caught by it twice, and I wasn't overly bothered by it, but I noticed there was a story about this in unmod (which didn't get approved - or, to my knowledge, acknowledged at all) from someone saying the same. Making the one month the default payment would make it appear less like an attempt to trick us.

          * Gold colours do not 'take' when you change them from a mobile device - they change back to a default colour.

Sorry it's long, but you did ask. I haven't the brainpower right now to recheck what I've written so if anything isn't clear, please let me know.

This is just off the top of my head from personal experience as well as from what I've heard from others.

Hi. Just wanted you to know what this was read in detail and I'm working to address all the issues mentioned if possible. I won't respond to all points, but here are a few notes:

            - I changed the gold gift default to 2 months, from 12

            - Moderation of comments: I've changed it so that members with excellent reputation (lots of thumbs up, many approved posts, etc.) that have been members for a while now will have relaxed automated checks. This should speed things up dramatically. I've also white-listed youtube links which seems to be a common case that's harmless.

            - I can't reproduce the mobile color changing issue, works for me.

            - If you don't want a recurring subscription, you can gift your self a limited block. I know that I don't make this very clear in the form, but it is an option for anyone that wants it.

            - I'm going to work on monitoring for people that get many of their comments reported so that their accounts get reviewed. Agreed that this should have been done earlier.

            - Abuse of the delete feature... I'm sure some people abuse it, but the amount of moderation work that it frees me up from having to do is huge and I don't think it's feasible for me to get rid of this feature.

            - I can't figure out the profile picture changing problems. For me it always works, so I'm not sure what the issue might be. I'll continue to try figure it out, but as far as I can tell things are working ok. I changed servers a week or so ago, so there may have been a temporary glitch around that time, but seems ok now.

That's all for now. As always, thanks for the feedback!

When you make a comment in unmod'ed on mobile half the time your comment will end up on an entirely different post.

Hmm, I can't seem to reproduce. Anyone else noticed this issue? Were you writing replies or new comments?

To be honest, everything works for me! Except for this one day where I somehow earned the thumbs down button and then it just disappeared...

Another one I've just discovered on desktop...trying to reply to comment, it lists it as a normal comment instead of a reply.

Did it here where I tried to reply to myself, too.

Seems to have fixed itself. Thanks anyway.

To the best of my knowledge, all other issues still stand.

Comment ratings seem to be working normally. There are some limits per IP address per comment and on how many comments you can rate by any particular user in a certain amount of time to prevent attacks. Perhaps these limits are why your rating was not counted in some particular cases. If you still think it's not working, please send a feedback email. Thanks!

    • I understand why there's a limit to thumbing down but I think restricting the thumb up feature too is overkill.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • That might be it. There are some users who make a bundle of perfect comments each day, and then there are users who do nothing but spew retarded nonsense.

I guess if I'm limited to 2 thumbs up or down each day, or whatever strict limit it is, then I should not even bother using the feature.

I won't comment on the exact limits, but it's a fine line. Have to protect against attacks and people making multiple accounts to vote for themselves. I'll tweak things a bit to hopefully improve the situation for you.
