Is it normal normal to stop reading the bible after gen 17

Sometimes when I am in a crisis, or I am very curious, I try to read the Bible. Try, being the operative word, because I always stop at Gen:17 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

I stop because basicly it's a metaphor. To read the Bible and understand the knowledge of good and bad would be just like Adam eating the fruit of it. There are many, many people who go to church regularly, have read the Bible at least once, and commit sins. Wouldn't that be worse?

Wouldn't it be better to be a good person naturally than forcing yourself to abide by rules just so you can go to Heaven? I know I have committed a lot of sins, knowledgeably and un-knowledgeably, but does anyone else think like this, or have trouble reading the rest of the Bible?

  • "Wouldn't it be better to be a good person naturally?"

How would you do that? If you aren't led by your thoughts, virtues, and ideals you'll be led by your most primal impulses. And any man led by primal desires is no better than the unthinking animal. Both are selfish and both think only of survival.

"There are many, many people who go to church regularly, have read the Bible at least once, and commit sins. Wouldn't that be worse?"

So you're saying because people try to be good and fail occasionally they should give up altogether and live a life free of virtue?

Should we also stop trying to succeed in life since we occasionally fail?

I understand what you're saying but a life lived trying to be virtuous(and failing) is better spent than living life by impulses alone and wallowing in human failure.

  • No, the best thing to do is what God tells us to do in his word, not what you think you should do, you silly human.

    • "The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures" is my favorite version. It was translated directly from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek scriptures into modern English, and the name of God, YHWH (Jehovah), has been restored where it had been removed in the King James version (over 7,000 times).

Well the whole point is that Adam did eat the apple and so man (all of us) have the ability to understand good and evil, thus we all die. It doesn't matter if you read the Bible or not...we are all judged the same in the end. You should read it so that you understand it as a whole. It's like reading the inner leaflet of a book, you have no idea what is all going on if you don't actually take the time to read and understand what it's about and how it all ends.
