Is it normal people sometimes call me ma'am?

I'm a young female in my early twenties and many people tell me I actually look about 18 or 19 which is good but can also be annoying. When I'm at the store I work at, I notice most people do call me miss but everyday at least 2 people call me ma'am and it annoys me. These people are usually men or women 20+ years older than me. One time I even had a 90 year old call me ma'am and I wanted to scream.

Is this a normal thing? I know I don't look 50 yet but when they call me ma'am, I feel SO old and wish I were younger. Actually, after they do that, I often take my bathroom break to look in the mirror at myself. I don't have any wrinkles that I can see at all. I know some early twenty-somethings get wrinkles but I have none so it can't be that. I don't understand this odd phenomenon.

Do you live in The South or in an area that has many Southern people living there. "Ma'am" is a way of showing respect to a female. I don't think that it has anything to do with age. They are merely acknowledging that you are a FEMALE who is in a respectable position.

  • Ma'am is a title used to denote females; I never got the impression that it had anything to with age.

    Relax. Please.

Don't know where you picked up that "Ma'am" was a designation of an elderly person, but it does not. This is normally used as a compliment. Try thinking of it that way and you will be a happier person....

I'm 53 , and want to stay young at heart for as long as I can. I don't have a desire to rob any cradles , but when I'm flirting around a little with some 1/2 my age , and it's stress free fun the killer is when she calls me sir !
I have a certain waitress at a Buffalo Wild Wing in TX , she's a doll , I'm married and will admit I'm attracted but it goes no further other than a hug to her as she's gonna head back to Missouri for good soon. I told her 2 weeks ago now you really made me feel old , and she said I'm sorry , force of habit ! She didn't call me sir again.
