Is it normal that children are scared of me?

Whenever I (46M) go to my nephew's school to check on him, all of the kids I see cry and run away from me, even if I offer them ice cream or candy. He's in elementary school, so aren't these kids old enough to trust grown-ups like me? Even my nephew says he doesn't want me to pick him up anymore and that his father told me I need to stay away. Last week, it got so bad that a little girl lied to the teachers about me, saying I was trying to get her to come into the bathroom with me (I wasn't, and even if I was there's nothing wrong with that anyway) and I can't come to the school anymore. What should I do?

    Why are you offering them sweets? The first two rules of stranger danger are “don’t get in their car” and “don’t take sweets from strangers”. I’m not surprised alarm bells are ringing in their heads over that.

      I never asked any if them to get in my car, except for my nephew of course so I could take him to his uncle's house. I tried offering them candy because it's around Halloween and some of the kids were wearing costumes so I thought they might want some

    What do you look like, what is your voice like, how do you smell and how do you move? No offence, but kids do judge on face value. If you are a corpulent, burly-looking man with a gruff voice, a heavy or jerky gait and a strong or unpleasant scent, that reaction from a child is unfortunately to be expected.

    I know that being female and medium-sized, slightly chubby, with big, olive-shaped eyes, fluffy-looking hair, a warm smile and a musical voice gives me an advantage when it comes to putting little kids at ease. You can bet that in other situations it's a disadvantage, though.

      I'm a little bit chubby and my doctor tells me I have bad posture so I'm a little hunched over sometimes when I walk. Is that bad? How do I look less creepy? I don't want them to be scared of me
      Edit: I forgot to mention that my shower has been broken for a few weeks now so I've been unable to wash myself but I use deodorant spray so I don't smell bad. Is it too strong? Do you think they can tell?

    Theres nothing wrong with a 46 year old man asking a elementary school girl to come into the bathroom with them? That makes me question your character by saying that.

      You don't understand. I obviously did not ask her to come into the bathroom. I was asking her where the girls' bathroom was because my niece needed to use it and she was new to the school at the time

        Theres definitely something wrong with trying to get her to come in even if theres no malice intent you never do that

    I suspect the reason why one would be scared of you would be because they aren't familiar around you, their responses to being scared is normal but extremely irrational it might mean that they may need to take some time to stop being scared of you.

    Also don't listen to those people who say you can't come to school anymore.

      Thank you for your advice but they are familiar with me I have been to the school many times. I didn't play on listening to the staff who said I couldn't come back anyway, I need to pick up my nephew before his uncle comes each day
