Is it normal that children think they're special

I work part time at an elementary school and many think that they're a genius or the smartest man on earth or that they're special and actually have some kind of super power. Is it a phase that most children nowadays go through?

I agree with colourmoon. Kids have always been that way... No specific reason, they just have. We all aspire to be bigger than ourselves, to be the best and brightest. Boys want to be the heroes slaying the dragon, girls often want to be the princess. They want to be special, different, unique. However, cynicism and reality soon set in, and they realize they are none of these things.
This is also a problem in high school... And one of the flaws of the education system in my opinion. Kids are praised at the slightest provocation, and have their egos stroked by being the big star athlete or special awards and all that. While this is good to a point, it often is taken too far, to the point where they have a long way to fall to reality after graduation. They are on their own, where they're used to someone holding their hand throughout high school. I feel like we should better prepare kids for this. But that's just my opinion.

I totally agree that there is such a great emphasis on kids' self-esteem that their expectations are not realistic anymore.

One girl out of beauty school made such a mess of painting nails at my friend's nail salon, she burst into tears when she failed the test. According to her, she was the best student in her class. According to my friend, she was the worst applicant she'd ever had!!

I feel sorry for them ~ although some do manage to bullshit their way into some great jobs.

Every parent tells their kids that they are special and can grow up to be anything they want. Can you imagine a parent that told their kids that they would probably end up in a cubicle someday, wasting life away on a broken office chair, while staring at a crappy computer screen? (I only use that example because it is exactly what i'm doing right now lol)

4 years into the future, and I can tell you it has got worse. A lot worse. Everyone's all like "I'm unique! There's no one like me!"
I can't explain why it pisses me off sometimes. My own girlfriend is one of those people. I feel like she thinks she's better than others because her "weirdness will one day be something special", or something along that line.

kids tend to be really creative. Why do you think they have imaginary friends?

Of course it is. Children have always been like that. We all want to be larger than life, and when you're a child, you have no perception of the limits that we're all under. You were like that when you were a kid, and so was I, regardless of whether we want to face that fact.

I thought I was great as a child but people always told me I was nothing.

I still tend to think I'll amount to something in this world, so it's absolutely normal.

I was like that when I was a kid, and still am, I think that I will save the world one day, or become someone important for the whole world, I mean like a politician or economist not like a super hero

Of course it's normal when adults are always telling kids from a young age that they're special and are praised for even the slightest thing.

not just nowadays, they always did.
it's the thing, that kids are the only persons that are proud of them and self-confident, just for who they are.
    adults could learn from them.

  • All children have traits of narcissism in their personalities at a young age. So yes, it's normal.

They're probably just having fun with their huge imaginations. They'll probably grow out of it. I'd say its normal.
