Is it normal that i always get animals and regret it later :/

Ever since I was a kid i have LOVED cute, small, furry animals, like bunnys and hamsters <3 I would squeal with joy at the thought of owning one of these little critters BUT when I actually get them I really don't know what I'm suppose to do with them :/ Even now I have a hamster who I fell in love with at the store and Impulse bought him, promising I would play with him everyday... That hamster really doesn't like me D:> I'd put him in his little run around ball and he smacks himself against the wall till the lid pops off and he runs away! So I'd stop allowing him to wonder so he sits there bored, angry and depressed, so I don't even bother playing with him anymore.. I really don't want him any more.. Should I get another one to keep him company? OH! I'd really like a white one :D

  • NO DO NOT GET ANOTHER HAMSTER. i know hamsters having had 5 myself, and hamsters are extremely territorial. if you put two together, they WILL kill eachother. also, ive had so many rabbits and hamsters, and i did regret getting them, and the exact same thing happened to me. i had two rabbits that i knew i didnt look after well enough, so i found them a new, better home. you need to do this too, especially if you are not caring for your pet properly. you will feel so much better if you do. and secondly, next time you go to the pet store, resist the temptation! and if you cant, and are not ready for a pet, dont even go to the petstore.

sometimes, hamsters eat other hamsters. I would think that if you do not want the hamster anymore than you should give it away to someone who will appreciate it more - like a child or a snake . . .

If it's a syrian hamster (the big kind) as opposed to a dwarf (small kind with stripe down its back) do NOT get another hamster and put it in the same cage. They will fight, probably to the death.
Next time you want to get an animal on impulse, really consider whether you're capable of the responsibility or not. A pet is like a child, and they require a daily routine and lots of attention and care for years... So keep that in mind.

Hamsters are also nocturnal so don't expect him to do much in the day...

It makes it easier to bond whn you just having one to care for. Let it smell you first and then take it out. Do it everyday so it gets use to you.

I've never met any small animals that liked balls. It causes most animals anxiety.
If you've only had him a few weeks, buy him a friend of exact or similar age (NO younger), if you've had him longer don't buy another. Older pets don't befriend well and will often kill new pets in the cage.
Pets should almost always be bought in pairs (exceptions occur).
Hamsters as a pet don't tend to do much, so daily activities (or lack of) can be confused with boredom. Make sure he's always fed, always has water, has a covered bed with bedding and maybe a few toys. They're quite low maintenance.
