Is it normal that i am obsessed with the myer briggs personality test?

All the time I will go online or to the library and research more about all of the 16 personality types. I've been doing since I was about 13, so I wanted it know if this was a normal thing to love learning. I really like to learn about how other people work together and the harmony that is created between all the types. I do it at least once a week for an hour or so and usually write a lot of it down. I think part of the reason I like it so much is because my personality is inclined toward these things. Anyone have a say?

I agree, it's interesting. It's a clever way of itemising personality, so long as you take it with a pinch of salt since it's clearly reductionist. There's an easy way to logically prove it's reductionist: just find lists of historical figures described as (for example) ENFP, and you'll find obvious differences in their personalities despite them being the same type.

I don't know if it's quite normal to take tests every week. To me that seems excessive, and if you take it that often any change you see is probably going to be reflecting your mood at the time, not a genuine personality shift.

I also think that the more you are conscious of the point of the test and the meanings of each type, the more your result is likely to be skewed by your own bias (in psychology we call the effect self-report bias, and self-report bias increases the more the reporter - i.e. you - knows about the test). I don't trust myself to take a Myers-Briggs test without imparting bias any more, so I just describe myself using the result I got when I first took it when I was 15 which was INFJ, even when I tested myself most recently (last week, by utter coincidence) I was INTP but I can't prove there was no underlying bias. I had ENFJ one time, and many other combinations - INFJ was just my most common result and my first result.

    What type are you, OP?

First letter is either I or E; I = Introversion, E = Extroversion. It's just whether you're an introvert or an extrovert, essentially.

Second letter is either N or S; N = Intuitive, S = Sensing. It's a measure of how you Perceive things.

Third letter is T or F; T = Thinking, F = Feeling. It's a measure of how you Judge things.

Fourth letter is J or P; J = Judging, P = Perceiving. This one measures whether you prefer to experience things by judgement or perception, so it tells you which out of your second and third letter is more dominant.

You can get any combination of the four letters, although some are more common than others, so there's 16 different types in all.

i dont know if that personality test would work on me, it should because its fairly vague though it seems like im stuck between some of them in the opptions...... this also makes it harder for me to decide what combination i would fall into if i were to also do the same for my other self.

its not just that, some questions cant be answered by me because i almost always have two opposing answers (and its not because im indecisive or anything like that -coughs- "DID and insanity", this also doesnt mean only a few questions will be unanswerable and that almost all will go unanswered) and on top of that, i tend to "think differently" then most people (for better or worse).

Yay, so many INFJs here! Ahh, I see; I just misread you. Taking the test every week would be a little silly :P

You should study psychology academically, if you ever get the chance. It's fascinating. You can learn about why people act in the way that they do, including personality and genetics and brain structure and childhood experiences and causes of disorders, how people behave in groups and how culture changes behaviour and so much else related to different facets of human behaviour. I've been studying psychology for four years now and it's my favourite subject. You'd like it :P

I honestly think psychology is quite a versatile qualification to have, depending on what sort of job you would like. As taboos about mental illness get broken down psychiatry is growing as an industry, and as a field of research psychology is young and growing too. It might grow even more if the world of humanities and the world of science continue to converge. Then there's sport psychology and clinical psychology and educational psychology... psychology can be applied to almost anything if you study it broadly you can work in almost any field. At the very least you could go into teaching (which is something that appeals a lot to me; maybe that too is an INFJ thing).

It's your decision though. It's something that you can continue to study in your own time, or you could study it later on in life as a mature student. There are still a lot of options if you don't study psychology :)

Well those typically are some of the extroverts that your are encountering. The ENTP for instance has a very competitive and argumentative nature, making not everyone like them. I know one, and I did it extremely hard to b around her. Every idea I throw out there she smashes down and she never stops insulting people. She literally greets me with "hey, bitchy moron". I test either INFJ or INFP (more often INFP). Rather than the categorization itself, I do tend to be interested - like you - in how people of various types interact.

I've often been accused of trying to save the world and the motives that have been attached to that are:

    a, to be trendy
    b, to impress people
    c, to show off
    d, to get sex
    e, to be controversial
    f, to put people down

They are the opinions of people who aren't INFP and I think, oddly, they're describing their own motives for completely different things. This is where it gets difficult because its not part of their personality type to be empathic and so while I (partially, of course) understand them, they don't understand me and think I'm exactly like them, but just pretending not to be.

My problem is that the types only highlight the problem. How people communicate better and understand better is another matter and one I haven't yet come close to dealing with in a quarter of a century.

Finally: isn't INFJ the rarest type? How odd there is a congregation of them on this thread. I wonder what that says about the site or this story.

Like I said above. The test isn't 100% accurate, but for me, when I came across it, it was like an angel! I felt, and still feel that I am misunderstood for my intentions and beliefs.
Yeah, I try to understand why some of the people respond the way they do. Obviously, if you have noticed, just about every person on here is intuitive, no doubt. That also goes with being an introvert. We introverts just love the Internet haha.
Btw, I love INFP's! You guys are just amazing. You have the right balance of everything to keep us sane.
I did find it strange that there were so many INFJ's here, but then I thought about it, and nope, not too strange. The INFJ's is labeled as the psychologist. This website is guided to help people through their problems. We INFJ's tend to gravitate toward that, it makes sense!

I think some of my answers would change on my mood.
I read the estp description. Some of it fits but I cannot read people at all. I'm like an extravert with no social skills.
Upon reading it more some of it doesn't fit at all. I'm a musician (which it says is a disfavored job) and I cannot multitask at all. I do have very little inhibitions or impulse control though.

She is really not very outgoing, but she loves being around people all the time. She too loves music, singing and playing. And what do u know, she can't read people for her life. Which can b such a critical thing for me as an INFJ. It is true, some people don't fit perfectly. Just think of it as: I'm so unique that they don't even have me on here!

It's pretty interesting, I guess. I've took it a few times. Some of those times the description is pretty off, even though I took it! Plus I don't like how it's either one or the other. Like dom180 said, it's massively reductionist. I can't quite remember why, but a couple of friends ended up taking it for me (and answering based on what *they* thought fit me best) and vice versa, and the result was surprisingly accurate.

It changes, especially as with some I'm on the cusp. I'll take it again now and see what I end up with.

Edit: Heh, another INFJ! We should start a club or something. Apparently with the first two it was only a slight difference. Plus I skimmed and found some difficult to answer *because we real answer was "it depends" or just because I wasn't sure).
