Is it normal that i bite myself when i'm angry?

I'm a little embarrassed to put this up here. I have this terrible habit of biting myself when I get angry, frustrated, or generally upset. I guess it started when I was a kid, and it's kind of like a compulsion where I can't stop myself from doing it. How hard I bite depends on how angry I am. I've never made myself bleed or anything; it usually just leaves an indention (most commonly on my hand or arm). Absolutely no one (except you guys now) knows about this because I will wait until the skin rises back up before I come out of my room. I don't do this all the time, just when I'm exceedingly angry or upset. So, is it normal?

I used to do this when I was a kid. It's a great coping mechanism but one of these days you're going to do some damage, like puncture a blood vessel or something. I think you need to find better ways to cope with your anger, I don't know if it's normal but I understand =/

Okay, this morning I googled biting fingers when angry, & I was surprised to find I'm not the only one. I bite 2 fingers when I get angry, think of something in the past that makes me angry. It too started when I was a kid. I remember exactly the day I started doing it. In our house, always heard, "If you don't stop crying, I will give you something to cry about." One day I got really mad, went into bathroom to throw a fit. I wanted to be quiet so I bit my right 2 fingers really hard. I'm 56 yrs old & am so ashamed of myself that I don't know how to stop doing it because it is so automatic that I don't realize I'm doing it until afterwards. I have callouses on fingers & every once in a while, I catch friends/co workers looking at my hand. Does anyone know how I can stop doing this? Where a rubberband on wrist? It's abnormal behaviour, I already know that. Surprised I found others that do the same thing.

I bite my knuckle a lot. When I'm nervous, afraid, angry, anytime. I also bite my wist and back of the hand but i really like the knuckle because the tendon or whatever kinda makes this popping noice when it suddenly moves around. It's fun but my friends say it's bad so I can't say. I don't know why I started but I am unable to stop.

I came on to see if anyone knew ways to cope. Guys, it's not okay to harm yourself in any way. I don't want to hurt myself and i don't think you guys should either. I began biting myself when i was young instead of hurting anyone else or to punish myself for doing something wrong or for hurting someone. Sometimes i really wanna do it again. I even feel like punching myself. It's not right and I've prevailed in stopping myself for a long time. The urge isn't right.

Personally, I think about this psychology study I read about. It essentially discovered that for people who took their anger out physically on pillows and such, they became more aggressive people over time. Those who didn't grew calmer and more incontrol of themselves. I don't want to be a harmful or aggressive person. If i can't stop myself from hurting me, one day i may hurt another person. Even then, I just don't think I should self harm and become my own enemy.

I hope you guys take steps in stopping too.

My child has dyspraxia; it has its pros and cons. She struggles in social situations and that stress can sometimes be too much and she tends to deal with it by biting herself. However, because of her dyspraxia, she can concentrate beyond the "normal" person, resulting in her ability to draw amazingly. My goal is to help her cope in ways that will bless her life and others without resorting to self-harm or any other negative behavior or thought patterns.

I came to this site excited that I would find some positive ways to help my teenage daughter deal with stress other than biting herself. Instead, I have found the opposite. My heart goes out to all of you who may not have had someone to tell you how precious you are and help you in finding ways to deal positively with the stresses of the world.

So from the perspective of a mother who loves her child, here is what I have to say about biting yourself:

Firstly, the question shouldn't be is it "normal", but "Is it ok?" The answer is NO. It is not ok to bite yourself or in any other way harm yourself. "Normal" is a relative term. No one is made the same. Our differences are what make us special.

Secondly, in the heat of the moment, you must find a way to positively deal with the stress in your life: meditation, prayer, service, eating well, taking vitamins, singing, dancing, exercising, shaking in private, sufficient sleep, talking with someone you trust, playing a game, watch a movie, forgive, stop smoking or taking drugs, limit alcohol, prioritize and organize, read, start a hobby, count to ten, exercise, journal write, count your blessings, smile and laugh, scripture study, and think positively.

Now, I can’t say that I have figured everything out, but I am reaching out. If any of you have any positive ways of dealing with stress instead of glorifying the act of self-biting I would love to hear it.

Peace upon u everyone, I am a cardiologist Muslim, surperizingly, I am searching for a scientific information about what's written in the Holly Quraan, the Muslim book, in Al-umran surrah, chapter number 119 ,119. Lo! You are the ones who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Scriptures [i.e. you believe in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), while they disbelieve in your Book, the Qur'an]. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe". But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: "Perish in your rage. Certainly, Allah knows what is in the chest and cores (all the secrets)."
We r Muslim believe strongly that when someone got angery or exactly wrathful he started to bite his terminal finger tips, and also this state could be terminated by death.
So our great prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, advised one of his friend came asking him to give a general advice he told him don't get angery then asked second advice he told don't get angery then asked the third, the same advice he gave.
That's why this Quraan coming from the only Creator, only God ALLAH. Answers for everything u will find in it.

I'm so glad I'm not alone. I've done this since I was five and I have anxiety and depression, but I've done it so often that theres a callous there. I'm trying to stop as I've heard repeated trauma to an area can cause a tumor. It's just involuntary when i'm in a rage or overwhelmed, sometimes I don't remember doing it but I look down and I have a bite mark

Ok first of all some of these comments aren't called for. I bit myself last night because I was very upset. I suffer from anxiety depression disorder and sometimes I get so angry at the smallest things even when it isn't worth the anger. I'm so glad that I'm not alone on the biting front. I've also been doing it since I was a kid. It's better than me cutting myself which is what I did when I was 14 after my Grandpa got hit by a drunk driver after he went into a diebetic shock and walked into the road. He died soon after sending my depression on the run through my system. Don't feel bad for doing it. Biting yourself, I mean, it's you lashing your anger out. As long as it's not someone else's hand. :)

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm 56 yrs old & have been biting fingers when I get angry since I was a kid. It's so automatic behavior, I don't know how to stop. That's why I googled my problem to see if anyone else does this. I've got callouses on the 2 fingers I bite on right hand & told my husband if I die before he does, to make sure my left hand is over right hand when I'm in the casket. My mom died last year & her right hand was over left. 1st thought was "everyone will see my callouses when I'm in the casket." Again, thank you for sharing.

Biting yourself is self harm. Normal? Well, not many people have the needs to do so, but you're not weird or something like that when you do...

Before, this would be true, but now I've exchanged biting out of anger to biting from physical pain.

If some bite-able place aches and I can't get it to stop (ie. a sore wrist), I will bite it so that I receive a more tolerable pain to focus on. Plus, it may sometimes relieve the aching for several minutes afterwards.

It's semi-normal. Just try to hold your temper more. I know I used to scratch myself & pull my hair but when you grow up the less and less things start to bother you.
