Is it normal that i can't stand "twitch" video games (like shooters)?

I consider myself a big time gamer, however when I tell people that I will ONLY play strategy games and RPGs (and I prefer turn based) that people look at me like I have 2 heads. I simply hate twitch based "action" games that to me all seem mindless and shallow. It doesn't help that my reflexes suck, but even if they didn't I wouldn't play those games.

I don't like games that go "react now or die". I only play most FPSs in easy mode, where it's mostly "it moves, so shoot it".

I played Left 4 Dead splitscreen co-op once, and we were in a dark, shabby building. I started twitching and firing at debris, into dark shadows, convinced I heard something. My friend saw my eyes bugging out of my head, and turned off the Xbox until I stopped hyperventilating, at which point we played Mariokart.

    • You should try Dead Space, that game makes me look like I'm breakdancing with the game controller, I'm such a nervous wreck trying to play it! :O

  • To be honest reflex games do need some intellect and you have to be fast at planning it out especially online you have to assume what direction another player is going to try reach by and find a way to reach them first meaning distraction etc games like thoses are strategy games but ones that rely on strategy reflexes. Anyone can solve a strategy if given enough time in reflex games you have to think of a strategy before the person reaches you.

      • Alot of it is, although the better players tend to keep an eye on their surroundings, amount of enemy players around, and probability of killing an enemy with the equipment they have and the equipment the enemy has.

Alot of people just run around, the more better players use strategy.

Haha, you sound like my friend. I'll never forget the sleepover where me and this other friend made her play Resident Evil and filmed her reaction, her facial expressions were priceless. Kinda mean now I think about it.

  • I find that in shooters and fighting games, if you play long enough (especially online) you can usually pre-empt what the other player is going to do or how they will react.

In the case they don't do what you expect, that's when your reflexes will matter the most because you have to react to the change in pattern or expectation.

But it's not a big deal that you only like those sort of games, I prefer to play fighting games over any other, I just like to beat virtual people up lol.
