Is it normal that i dig through the garbage at work...

... and I'm proud of it.

I work as a night clerk at a gas station and I lock my doors from midnight to four in the morning for the nightly cleaning routine. When it's time to take out the garbage though, I pick through it for certain things. (Note: I ALWAYS wash/scrub/sanitize my hands afterwards, and if I have a cut or anything on my hands I wear gloves.)

I check all the discarded scratch off lottery tickets, I've found lots of free tickets this way.

I collect and crush aluminum cans to take to the recycling. I make quite a bit of money doing this.

I collect Coca-Cola bottle caps, the ones with the point codes. I got a free gardening kit after I amassed 1000 points, and now I have over 1200 points again.

Currently, I collect Monster can tabs, when I collect enough I can get Monster gear for five dollars shipping.

Currently, I'm collecting points from Mountain Dew twelve packs, when I get enough of those I can order gear from dewoutdoors.com .

Collecting these things means digging through all kinds of filth. Some days the contents of the garbage bags are alright, and some days I'm dodging vomit and shitty baby diapers.

But if it means making more profit, I don't care. I'm proud that I have the guts to do whatever I can to make ends meet.

I would ask, "Is it normal?", but I really don't care.

I just wanted to rub it in your faces, though.

I'd never go that low. 6
I'd think about doing it if I ever had to, for whatever reason. 14
I'd would definitely do it, but only if I had to. 15
I dig through garbage some, but not that much. 2

    I'd definitely do that!!

One of my first real jobs was in hotel housekeeping and I rifled through everything after a guest would check out....yes, it's part of the job, but I'd go way above and beyond. I took cans out of the trash and stuff like that. Of course, if it was obviously a forgotten item that probably had some value to the guest it would go in the lost and found but if they didn't claim it, I'd get it eventually if I wanted it.

It's funny because the housekeeping department had this rule that all cans were to be pooled together and they returned them once a month. The catch was, I had to have worked there a whole month, and wait til the NEXT month to receive my 'cut' of the can money. Once I heard that, I was like 'fuck you, bitches, I'm taking my motherfucking cans home every day, shove that shit up your ass'....and I did, and I made quite a bit of extra money, and they were pissed but couldn't do shit about it. I took home a big sack of cans every day I worked while they sat there giving me the evil eye as I walked off with my haul. Fuck 'em.

I do exactly the same thing, I'm a voulenteer at a charity shop and we're not allowed to sell electrical goods so whenever I'm asked to throw things away I always take a little something, I've got numerous ipods and a tone of cameras, all of which work, I've even gone into skips and such looking for "treasures"

my father always used to bring home bottles when i went camping (I have a large family my grandmother had 13 kids and i have 32 cousins) and we had to take off the tabs and let them be made into wheelchairs and recycle the cans and bottles. this is the closest thing i have ever came to what you do

I've been dumpster diving, it's fun. People throw away lots of useful things.

If digging though trash, benefits you, then keep doing it. I use to do the same thing. People always seem to throw out valuable stuff.

I haul aluminum cans off, too. You wouldn't think it was fucked up if you saw the wad of cash I get off of them suckers. Just saying.
