Is it normal that i don't lie?

So I was reading another post recently and I started to wonder if this is normal. Apart from the "you look great in those jeans" variety of lies, I don't lie. It sucks sometimes, but I have found that since I stopped lying all together, my life has been considerably less dramatic. I even find myself a better person, because I know I will be held accountable for all of my actions.

I guess my question is, is it normal for a person to not tell lies ever?

You should read about Orval Mowrer's theories on psychotherapy. They're really interesting. He basically posited that most, if not all of life's sufferings develop from our penchant for lying and the resulting guilt that shadows our interpersonal relationships. His idea was that honesty allows for the conflict we are so afraid of, and only in allowing that conflict can we really understand our true compatibilities with people.

    • ^^^It's actually plausible when you look at it.

I would NEVER tell someone I like they look good in a pair of jeans that makes them look like a chubby elephant in a skinny giraffe's outfit.

It's not normal, people lie. Yet, I voted yes. Maybe it was wishful thinking, maybe because that's how I live. It gets me in trouble and in arguments sometimes, but it's my nature, I'll never fight against it. And it does make life way easier. The only drawback is that you might expect the same truthfulness from everybody else and not get it. Anyway, I still find the clear conscience outweighs that frustration.

    Happy Truthtelling!

Ya the expecting the same from everybody else has bitten me in the ass a few times. I always trust people until they give a reason not to.

    Here's a paradox: I always lie.

Not a paradox. Even if that statement is a lie, it could still be true that you SOMETIMES lie and sometimes tell the truth. I think the paradox you're looking for is "this statement is false" or "I am currently lying", because those statements can only be entirely true or entirely false.

Paradoxes don't work as sometimes. Paradoxes function as in it contradicts itself but can still make sense, like time travel.

The phrase is a paradox because I'm not saying that I sometimes lie, I'm saying that I always do it. However, the phrase cannot be taken as a truth because it states that I always lie, yet, I'm stating something that is true. Am I confuse you? If so then great, that's the point.

        Here's another one:

        The bottom sentence is true.
The above sentence is a lie.

Right, that's a common form of it too.

"I always lie" is still not a paradox, though.

I actually posted a response as to why it is a paradox though, it's right below this comment.

I replied. I'm not sure if I can explain it any better, but "I always lie" is definitely not a paradox. Your second example is, though.

Everyone lies. It's just a matter of who does it on accident, and who does it on purpose.

      What's an accidental lie?

You don't think you've ever told a lie by accident?

I have told lies by accident, but if it's anything of consequence I always go back and rectify it.

I think an accidental lie is more commonly known as a "mistake".

            Potatoes pototoe-

'No, Dammit, it's po-ta-toes! Get it right!'

            Fair point though.

I don't lie simply coz my mother lies constantly and I regard her as a fool for doing so. I catch her out all the time and find it so pathetic and boring!

I would not be rude to someone but I will tell parents if they are wasting their time 'pushing' their children academically - wasting their money and my time. Honesty is the best policy and you are 100% right, it reduces drama to zero :o)

Ya, getting caught in lies always makes the liar look like a fool! Then they always try to lie more to get out of the original lie and everything just crumbles around them... bad deal!

Yeah I can't really lie. Sometimes if someone asks me what I think about their new shoes or something I tell them the truth and they think I'm lying haha. When I try to lie I either laugh or start smiling while I'm doing it or I tell them I lied right after. Like if someone asks me what I did today I'll lie then tell them I lied I didn't do shit today.
