Is it normal that i feel pressured to go to college?

It's not that I don't want to go, it's just that if I don't, then I'll have no idea what to do with my life. I also feel pressured because no one in my family has really went to college, and if I quit, then I'll feel like a disappointment.

If you're not ready for college, you're not going to succeed. And if you don't know what you want to do with your degree, or what degree you want, you're going to go into a lot of debt over nothing.

Maybe poke around the net, find a job you love that you're not qualified for. Then find via LinkedIn someone in that position, at a company you respect. Look at their job history and educational background. Try to contact them to ask for an "informational interview". If it's a larger company, perhaps try to speak to someone in charge of hiring to determine what kind of educational or work backgrounds interest them. If it's a popular industry, sometimes headhunters can be a great resource for this type of thing, too.

Bottom line, don't just "go to college" and expect a job to materialize, doing something. Start with the end in mind, and work backwards. It'll make fighting for that diploma that much more worthwhile, and increase your chances of success.

    • I know what I'm going to college for, I'm just worried about the outcome, if you know what I'm saying.

Society forces everyone to go to college but like some have said "Not everyone is cut out for college".

Do what you want to do in your life. Don't let anyone judge you for who you are. If you wanna go to college, go to college. If you wanna work at Burger King, work at Burger King. If you wanna waste your time asking others, waste your time asking others.

I went to college, and there was no need for me too. But it was the best thing I ever did. Now I regret not doing a degree.

College opens doors for you. I'd go and spend a lot of time exploring majors and possible career paths. Do a lot of job shadowing, and schedule many appointments with your advisor. Take legit personality and career tests. By the end of it all, you'll probably have a good idea of where you want to go in life.

I don't see much point in going to college if when you get out you owe 6 figures (loans) and can't find a job. I you are not smart about choosing a direction it is a total waste of time and money today.
$100,000.00+ is a pretty expensive party, even if it does last four years!

    • I am commuting the first two years, so I'm pretty sure I won't be going to many parties then :)

It's normal to feel pressured. However most people who ewent to college feel that they have lived their best years there.

I felt pressured too. Like, I wanted to go I guess? BUt i just knew I had to? My family, my friends, everybody expected me to. Nobody thought I wouldn't go. I guess they wouldn't have hated me if I had decided not to go, but they wouldn't have expected it. I wanted to go, or at least, I knew I was going to, (i dont know if i wanted, i just thought i was going to. like, i wouldnt have known what to do if not), so nothing happened.
Don't feel pressured about quitting though, I doubt you will anyway. It's fun and exciting. Just go, STUDY, and have fun :)
