Is it normal that i find geek culture somewhat annoying?

Hold your horses- I like Spider-Man, Legend of Zelda, Lord of the Rings, Tchaikovsky, Star Wars, Vampire Knight, thick-rimmed glasses, etc. a lot! Yes, I believe intelligence is a huge asset in a great guy. So what seems to be the problem?

My problem is that I think the "geek culture" is getting too overrated. Heck, the words "geek" and "nerd" annoy me now.

Yes, I live in the modern age and I love a lot of things people would consider "geeky," but I think it's getting to be too much for me.

Sometimes, I get peeved when people use "nerdiness" as a status. I flip out when I see girls on Facebook wear large glasses and have a caption like "Nerd! <3," argh!

Hence, this is a reason why I avoid "The Big Bang Theory" TV show. The characters seem like smart guys, but I'll pass. I don't understand who Doctor Who is, shoot me.

Plus, when I see merchandise that involves "geeky" themes, I realized how much capitalism grabs people and their money.

As an East Asian, people would assume that I should be into animes and Korean dramas. Yes, I do like and admire them, but from afar.

So, is it normal fans, is thinking that geek culture is overrated, normal? (Most of you guys would probably say no, sadly.)

It's funny I was talking to a girl at a bar the other day with big black rimmed glasses. Then I realized there was no lenses in them, upon closer inspection I noticed the "3D" logo on the side. She had taken them from the cinema. That was kind of sad.

What you are talking about is hipsters. People who are actually that blind would prefer not to need glasses. The big bang is actually really funny. One of the shows I will watch.

Agreed. They're trying to make it "cool" to be geeky...and the Big Bang theory is a pretty good show

agreed, OP seems to be mixing the two up a little bit. Hipsters are annoying, nerds are fun.

No it is geek/nerd fashion. As to the hipsters being a geek is cool. Why they picked up the fashion of having oversize glasses.

I like a lot of stuff considered "nerdy" and would be labelled a nerd by someone viewing my DVD and games collection but I don't know why people can't just like stuff and move on. It's fine if you go to conventions, cosplay, etc. but the people that shove what they like down people's throats and constantly talk about how much they hate everyone else's opinions annoy me.

Geek chic is just one of the worst things to happen to mankind. Wearing thick-rimmed glasses and a t-shirt with the word "GEEK" written on it doesn't make you a "Geek". I hate when anyone thinks they are part of a culture that they aren't. For example, I knew someone a few years ago who listened to the likes of Paramore, Kids in Glass Houses (what ever happened to them?), Fall Out Boy and all that stuff but was adamant that he was a metalhead. You aren't something just because you label yourself as it. If I say I'm black, it doesn't mean I am.

And now people keep asking me if I wear these large glasses because I like this geek chick stuff(I don't)... And I was a nerdy kid before I started wearing them...

I agree entirely, I literally got disgusted looks from my friends when I had to 'confess' that I take no joy in obsessing over comics or video games! It's the girls with the enormous glasses which annoy me the most though, I actually need them to see yet I can't wear them without being labeled a 'wannabe nerd'.

    Fuck geek culture.

Over-exposed, yes. Over-rated, not sure about that.

I cannot stand people who call themselves nerds. It's just another arrogant term for oneself.

Maddox has a VERY relevant blog post on this, swing by the best page in the universe with a cup of tea for a good laugh.

In all seriousness, yes, it annoying the living crap out of me as well. The whole fad with nerds currently hurts actual nerds, not help. It's like a patronizing punch to the gut.
