Is it normal that i find people who want to live in japan pathetic?

Hi, I am a pure Japanese descendant that currently lives in America. I have lived in Japan many years and me and my family visit our relatives every year.

Well, the thing is that lately I have been noticing a lot of "Japan lovers" all over the place. I don't think that there is anything wrong with liking the Japanese culture, but I think it is very sad to hear when people say that their dream is to live in Japan. And this is mostly because almost no one has any idea at all about how Japan truly is. For example, I find it really pathetic when people claim to "love" Japan just because they like manga/anime or just because they find the country "weird". Japan is definitely not the "otaku" wonderland that everyone think it is, and to be honest, it is not even that odd.

What is really depressing is the fact that most of the people who go to live in Japan arrive with unreal expectations. Many people end up loving the country anyway, but I think most end up regreting the decision to move there. What most people don't seem to understand is that japanese people are conservative, racist, xenophobes, sexist and collectivist (Japanese hate individualism and people who stand out). People just doesn't notice all this, because Japanese are discriminative in a very discrete way. Japanese people have a strange ability, if you don't behave as expected, people will humilliate you with politeness and kindness.

But mostly, the main issue is that a foreigner will never be truly accepted by the Japanese. If someone is a foreigner, they will always be treated as a visitor, even if they learn the language, start a family and live for decades in Japan. Not only that, their kids will be discriminated as well if they dare to reproduce in Japan. Even I am discriminated in Japan, just because I don't live there.

And well, I just wanted to ramble and see what you all think about. I look forward to your comments.

  • Those American youngsters who say they love it fail understand Japanese culture in its entirety. They've romanticized and cherry-picked the parts they adore and ignore the rest. If they actually moved there, they would soon become homesick in a bad way.

    Absolutely.
I wonder if someone in Japan wants to move to the USA using their knowledge of The Simpsons.

I'll be honest, I want to visit Japan, not live, and yes I do want to go because I love anime. Although lately I've been hearing people like you discuss the same thing, that Japan is not a wonderland, which I believe. But I still want to visit it because of how interesting it looks, same reason why I want to go to France. But yeah I guess since you've had your own experience in Japan I could see why you'd think people who want to live there would be pathetic, because they are ignorant.

I'll admit that I do want to visit Japan, and a huge part of that is because anime/manga has sparked my interest about the country and its culture. I want to visit, but do I want to live there? Hell, no.

Japan has more issues with the whole virgin/whore concept with women than America has even dreamed of. Why on earth would I want to live in a country where I will always be judged?

I have a Chinese penpal who lives in Canada. Her parents are from China. Your description of the Japanese sounds a lot like what I have observed from her description of family life. The Chinese seem to have an extremely depressing culture also, much as you are describing about the Japanese. She says her parents speak an unusual language - not Mandarin or business type Chinese - and even the children don't speak it! The mother only speaks this language and can't communicate except with the father. The father and children speak English, but not terribly well. None of them speak French, which makes it hard to find jobs where they live in Ottawa. It all sounds awful to me. They live together in what sounds like a very dysfunctional family. She doesn't know how to make friends and her marriage failed. Her Chinese husband treated her badly. I wish I could help her, but I can't figure out how she can better her life.

yeah that is why I want to visit japan, not live there. too many people fantasize about life their from watching to many animes. I think if I have to move to a random country of my choice it be more like Sweden. Live in a country of happy derp speakers

    • I'll take that as a compliment :)
I would like to study in Japan and eventually move there permanently if I find the country pleasant enough.

Det var allt för den här gången, hoppas vi hörs snart igen :)

Everyone I've met like that is a sexist, nerdy white man. I remember this one guy who went to Japan was all über into Japanese culture and he just randomly tells me about how women get groped on the subway and never do anything about it as not to "dishonor" the groper. Ugh, that makes me want to break or cut off fingers. WTF!!! I don't want to hear about that in the way he talked about it. That kinda shit makes me want to kill!

Well, maybe not chopping cause that is extreme but breaking might be a little more appropriate.

I'm happy I've never really had to use public transportation. I think I rode the subway like once or twice in New York. I love lots of personal space!

This is so funny. I wonder what would happen if you told one of these people that. Their heads would explode. I want to agree with this but I feel saying so would make it seem as though I have something against Japanese. I find any person that would fall under someone else boot because they are a different race pathetic. I know a lot of people like this and they are obnoxious.

Some fellows dream for Japan to be everything they love yet they do not realize that Japan is secretly everything they hate.

It truly is a disgusting state of affairs.

I'm American and Caucasian and not to mention I'm a fan of japanese culture and anime, yet I completely agree with you. I'm pretty logical when it comes to things not to mention I'm interested in japanese culture. Aka not just japanese pop culture but also it's history. I actually have read about Japan's past civilization and present civilization. I know how Japan actually is because of this. I also know someone who lived there during his time in the military and he has told me about his experience there. Even without him I already know it's not thr anime otaku utopia with only nice people everyone thinks it is. I would love to visit , not sure if I'd ever live there. And if I did I would know what I'm getting into. I mean I'm sure Japan is very nice but it's nothing like what a lot of people think it is. A lot of my friends either used to want to live there or still do. They are obsessed with the idea. I think it's really stupid and annoying. I totay agree and it's normal.

I think thats the same with any country it's like the people that are in a rush to come to the uk and then when the penny drops they feel like someone smashed them with a ban hammer.

I had a dream I moved to Japan. This has never been something I've consciously wanted to do, but for some reason in my dream I moved there and it was great.

About a year or two ago, I heard that a game for the DS called Love Plus was released in Japan. I was really excited and wanted so badly for it to be sold in America. But to my misfortune, Konami never released the game to the states. Since then, I've been boycotting them (as in not buying any of their games under any circumstances). Is it normal for me to hold a grudge like this?

No. Boycotting them won't do much. If anything, they'll see sales in your country are decreasing. and won't focus as much as releasing games there.
