Is it normal that i get more help here than from my psychiatrist?

My psychiatrist prescribes me drugs for bipolar but doesn't listen to a thing I say. She just tells me to set up an appointment with a therapist...been there done that a half dozen times. Is this a healthy alternative (this website)? I feel a ton better (and it's free).

As long as it isn't harmful to others or to yourself, you should do whatever you need to make yourself feel better.

And that includes using this website if it helps.

Psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists are all getting paid to listen - it doesn't mean they WANT to listen, though. Sometimes it is more therapeutic to talk to like minded people - whether you know them or not! That is the wonderful thing about the world wide web - millions of people are on it every single day, and you're bound to bump into someone that has the same problems as you.

Psychiatrists don't listen to your problems. They just prescribe you meds and check up on you to make sure they're working right. Trust me, I know - I also go to a psychiatrist. In my personal experience, therapists don't help out a lot. I mean, they're great when you want to vent, but they won't help you discover yourself.

I think this website's awesome because you get honest feedback as to whether or not something you do/experience is "normal".

i would never see a psychiatrist. i see psychologists. there is a big difference in how they treat you.

I feel good about life and the people in it when I visit this site, but that doesn't make me feel very normal.
I feel like I SHOULD be in therapy, but I'm not. The last time I was I felt like I was putting on a performance and I was discouraged by the fact that my therapist only wanted to blame all my problems on one traumatic event and wanted me to take drugs for my depression.

Hey, there are a lot of people here that can identify with what you are going through. Trust us, as I can assure you that (except for very few)we will be honest with you. Okay?

Psychiatrists are nothing more than glorified drug dealers. I am a guy and I cross dress which relieves me of more stress than their drugs ever could.

I have a bipolar disorder too and i see both professionals. I started with meds and the Dr. set me up with the psychologist because he said & i quote "pills will help you a bit, but therapy and you, will do the rest".

Of course a site helps more than her. Therapists and psychologists and councilors can't help you. They don't care two shuts if you get better they just want your money. That's why they always push for their patients to be on meds = more $$.

Some of us mean well but remember that we are not professionals. I'm glad that you feel better from some comments.

  • Aussiewolf is correct.

Psychiatrists; are not trained to "counsel" you back to mental health. They are there to diagnose your condition and prescribe you medication.

Psychologists; go to school for years and years to learn how to help you modify your behavior and thought processes. However, they cannot prescribe medication.

If you are bipolar, you would benefit from seeing both types of professionals.

It's nice that you like the advice you get on this site though. You're right, it can be helpful, sometimes.
