Is it normal that i have a gigantic fear of sharks?

I go to a beach and I don't want to swim, I have nightmares only with sharks.
Tell me, is it normal to have such a big fear of an animal that it pratcally becomes an obssession and almost destroy your nights with frequent nightmares only with it?

I was almost evil enough to send you the scene from Deep Blue Sea where Samuel L. Jackson gets eaten by the shark that, out of the blue, jumps out of the water behind him, but I decided I would pass on that. :)

Perhaps I can help. Most sharks are scavengers. Their function is to clean the seas of dead and dying things. If you've ever had a fish in a bowl, if it gets ill, often it will come to the surface and gulp air. That is how humans appear to sharks. Other times, a surfer on his board in a wet suit will appear to be a seal, which IS a favorite for them. However, most sharks will release a human almost instantly, if they do bite. We are not on their menu. They do not prefer humans or search them out for food.
Most shark bites in Fla are from people stepping on a little shark, swimming near the beach. Like a dog, when 'attacked' (getting stepped on) they will react by biting. It's not a food thing. Just shuffle your feet in the water at the beach and you can avoid both shark and sting ray encounters.
Just remember, you are definitely NOT on the menu and NOT meal most sharks would consider palatable.

  • Very unlikely to be attacked by a shark. I have heard they will not even be interested in you unless you are bleeding.

Actually, if you bleed, they will avoid you entirely because they are put off by the scent of warm blooded things. That is why, if they bite you, they will almost immediately let go
