Is it normal that i hurt animals like this as a child?

When I was a kid I hurt animals sometimes. Does this strike you as normal childhood stuff or serious cruelty?

* caught a pigeon when I was two and pulled its feathers out. parents say I looked all astonished it got upset

* starting around six(?) I used to bait the cat with bacon tied to a string and lure it into an elaborate collapsing box trap for fun

* threw rocks at small animals as like the obvious fun thing to do with them. parents didn't like it

* later when I was 13(?) I would pick up the cat by the forelegs spin in a circle and throw the cat at the wall from maybe four feet away. the cat would hit the wall maybe four feet in the air and slide down. that cat did not like me much

* favourite 6th grade class project was mounting insects for display had to kill them in a jar with cyanide first

* my favourite beach vacation activity was catching animals (frogs mostly) and putting them in sandpits I'd spend hours building

* in 9th grade I was kinda infamous for killing the terrarium animals by neglect and rough handling (including amphibians you weren't supposed to touch but I did anyway). other students noticed and were creeped

* did two high school science projects one where I put crickets under light for weeks to see how many died and another where I subjected worms to heat to see if they moved. titles "Cricket See the Light" & "Can Worms Stand the Heat" should I have seen something weird about it? (the second got me a $100 prize)

Never felt bad doing any of these things. Is this beyond normal kid stuff?

Kind of borderline IMHO. Throwing a cat at the wall for fun at 13 definitely doesn't sound normal. I've certainly heard worse though.

  • My parents didn't know about all of it, particularly not throwing the cat against the wall. I was told off for the more extreme behavior when it happened in front of them, but I was highly disciplined for the slightest real or imaginary thing and it didn't stand out. It wasn't the best childhood environment generally.

No, I didn't and don't feel bad. The cat and strong bit was fun and still sounds fun. Is that particularly abnormal?

Sadly it's quite normal for children to do a lot of things as they are very curious and naive. Especially toddlers (age 1-2) - they are generally not being malicious but they do it out of curiosity AFAIK. The one you did at 13, in 9th grade and on beach vacations seems more extreme - I wouldn't call those normal. I'm also a bit concerned that you didn't feel bad about doing those things, and that your parents didn't take major disciplinary action on you (at least that's what I'm getting from this - did they discipline you?).
