Whenever a random stranger smiles at me(usually girls, rarely guys for some reason), my automatic reaction (especially when they are attractive) is to smile back. But I always force myself not to smile back at people and ignore them. I have no idea why I do it, but I go against my automatic reaction for seemingly no reason.
Maybe it's because you know that it's just a courtesy smile that they are giving you and that doesn't feel real enough to you to warrant a smile back at them from you? You want to be polite, but at the same time you also hate formalities and therefor refuse to oblige by societies conformisms (somebody please correct me on the usage of that last word...)
Did that even make sense? Maybe somebody else could explain it better.
It's better that you do that. People (subconsciously) lose a little respect for people who give their smiles away too easily. Making them work for your smile will draw them to you, especially people who are used to easily receiving smiles.
But don't withhold your smiles from children, your family, your closest friends, or the elderly and infirm.
I always withhold my smiles from children and my family! Though the elderly, I can't help but smile at them...they're adorable!
Anyway, as for the OP...I'd say it's normal, as I tend to not smile at people who smile at me back. It's kind of a "Fuck you. I know you're only doing me a courtesy, but stop being so damn fake!" statement.
