Is it normal that i keep track of many different things and tag everything?

I've had this habit for many years now which involves keeping track of many different things and also having many files in my computer tagged very specifically, so to give some examples:

I keep track of:

- The albums and discographies I've listened to, a 0-100 rating (not even 0-10), a tick to know if I reviewed them and the date of the completion of an artist's discography.

- Bands I've seen live and gigs I've attended.

- Books I want to read, movies I want to watch, albums I want to listen to, videogames I want to play, software I'd like to try.

- Stuff that I'd like to have or I'd enjoy doing, like "Visiting another country" or "Buying an electric bass".

- Songs I've learned on the guitar.

- I also use services such as Last.fm, HowLongToBeat and Letterboxd rather compulsively.

Regarding tagging, I have my digital music library completely tagged, with: Song name, title, track number, artist, album, year, specific genre (like Progressive Melodic Death Metal). I also tend to tag images based on their qualities like "Dark", "Cute", and so on. I also have my Steam library organized with all the games tagged based on their specific genres, number of players, qualities such as "Removed from the store" and I also keep a list of the games I need to complete or get their 100%.

I feel like I have an OCD or something, because I do this compulsively with A LOT of stuff.

Wow, I'm a lot like that. I don't tag all my files but I do keep lists of stuff like that. Actually most of those lists you've described I have too. I guess it's like OCD that I can't stand having fragmentary bits of information all scattered around in my head, I have to set it all down in a text document and organise it all.

I think it's also because I fear forgetting and forever losing that information. Like I didn't intentionally start making a list of films I want to watch. I just wrote down a couple films I've heard of that sound interesting and that I wanted to check out, just in case I'd forget the name of them. Then I added a few more, then a few more, and it turned into a list.

That fear of forgetting reason also makes sense since I also like to make comprehensive notes of anything I learn. I sometimes just randomly get really into learning about some specific random topic, and when I do I'll have to make lots of notes about it.

I've never thought it was normal though tbh, I've always felt like a bit of a freak for it tbh.

    YES!!!

OMG, I thought I was the only one who did this, lol!

I have always loved filling out Excel spreadsheets of multiple lists like this, mostly experiences, an inventory of one of my collections, etc. I love sorting it in all sorts of different ways and listing out characteristics! It is almost like a puzzle to me. I like to play around with sorting and listing this information in different ways.

I used to always fill out all of the details in my music like you describe on my computer as well (probably will again once I get my computer fixed)!

One of my music libraries is organized in folders sorted by decade, then by year, then by band/artist.

I even compile lists in my brain at random times, usually when bored or waiting on something!

With my collection, I will organize it by exact item, then list brands, parent companies of said brands, countries of manufacture (even the exact factories where applicable), the year I acquired each item (and the year of manufacture where applicable). Same with type of design, size, etc. I have a HUGE inventory all in my head that I can list off at any given moment!

I also rode horses for over 20 years and can list every horse I remember riding, and many details about them. Registered/show names, dates of birth, color, breed, partial pedigrees, etc. I also have that database in my head!

As far as OCD goes, I'm not sure if you or I either one have it, but I see this as a harmless hobby (and pretty fun for me) and say if it's not hurting yourself or anyone else, it's nothing to worry about!

  • Man I wish I had a computer to compile and organize information. I'm using notepads, let's just say it's tried but not true
