Is it normal that i left college like this?

College got inexplicably complicated, and I decided to take a semester off and broaden my horizons.
Originally from the states, I traveled across the world to China and have been exploring and learning ever since I landed.

Funny thing is, because of the censorship here, there is no access to social network sites such as twitter, facebook, tumblr and instagram.
(Do a quick google search and you can read up on censorship in foreign countries)even youtube is blocked here!

I'd planned to keep in touch with college buddies and friends, but when I discovered all my social media was unavailable to me, I simply didn't bother to reach out to them.

I arrived in dead of winter January and now I find its April already!

My friends are aware and know what I'm doing in China,(I explained before I packed up and left) but they haven't heard from me, its been four months, and I miss them sometimes but
I'm happily alone and haven't felt the need to check in.

I know what they're up to. or I can guess pretty accurately. classes, college, parties and the usual. A lot can happen in four months, Maybe someone found a boyfriend, maybe someone broke up, maybe they switches majors or joined a club,
I'm just not curious enough about them to figure out the 11 hour time difference and pay the long distance phone call.

Is it normal to just wander off and not want to talk to loved ones from home for half a year?

Has humanity forgotten about e-mail?! Letters?! Phone Calls?

Forget social networking. There are modes of communication available yet, you aren't making the effort to use them!

"it was about the adventure, and communication could not keep up." Yeah I feel it. But because of technology these days, I feel I have less of a reason not to check in. I just don't want to yet, I feel like I'm in a different world right now, and if I start correspondence with people from home, the illusion will be shattered, and I'll just be some kid that abandoned ship aka college.

What were you doing for that pretty decent living? Journalism seems like an obvious choice.
I'm currently putting my English skills to good use and teaching some natives for 50 yuan an hour, which translates to minimum wage in dollars.

I've just "wandered off" my whole life. It wasn't about not wanting "to talk to loved ones from home", because 40 years ago you couldn't just pic a mobile device and communicate with anyone you chose, it was about the adventure, and communication could not keep up.
Fortunately for me, I found a way to make a pretty decent living while I was "wandering off", so it worked out very well for me.
I guess I'd be the last person to criticize you.
