Is it normal that i'm 21 and i have never shaved my legs

I am a 21 year old girl and I have never shaved my legs because up until now I believed that once you start shaving the hair when it re- grows it will be ten times more hair than it was. Right now I'm beginning to feel more like a woman and will buy some hair removal cream next week. Is hair on legs REALLY that gross or that much of a turn off? Even if it's just subtle.

  • You have the same number of hair follicles whether you shave, wax, or use a chemical cream. All of the hair on your body goes through an anagen hair growth cycle; which means each hair grows to it's full length and eventually falls out, then a new hair grows in its place.

If you pull out a hair from the root (waxing), the growth process starts from the beginning, growing a single brand new hair to replace the one you ripped out.

If you shave it, then you are cutting the hair off at skin level, but it continues to grow. Only now, instead of a soft tapering end, it is a sharp edge and feels prickly.

If you use a chemical cream, it dissolves the hair *slightly* below the skin surface and doesn't leave a sharp edge like shaving, but it too will continue to grow.

Laser hair removal burns the hair follicle with light absorbed by the hair root, damaging the follicle so it cannot produce any more hair.

Electrolysis also damages the follicle with an electrical pulse with an electrode needle inserted into the follicle.

I really don't understand why women having hair on their legs is such a socially unacceptable thing. It's stupid if you ask me. Sure people can have preferences on which they find more attractive but women shouldn't be condemned if they choose to not shave their legs.

I'm 41, and I have NEVER shaved my legs. I'm also a guy, so I guess we can't compare.

My best friend is 20 and she has never shaven her legs. She also has very fair, light blonde hair, so it's really not noticable at all unless you look closely, especially if she has a tan from being outside in the summer.

On the other hand, I have been unfortunate enough to have coarser, dark, fast-growing hair. I get it from my mothers' side (I'm half Japanese).
I only ever shave if I know my legs will be on show, or if I just feel feminine. Sometimes I just want smooth legs :)

It seems silly to shave my legs when nobody is going to see them. What a waste of razors, shaving foam, water and time.

I did have an silk epile epilator and the electric shaver head worked fantastically on my legs, but I lost it so now I'm back to disposable razors... *sigh*

If you have blonde hair, or just a little stuble thats hardly noticeable... I guess its understandable. But if you have a forest growing on your legs..., you probably should shave that.

To a certain degree a woman might have to shave her legs( if she wills it) for it is too obvious or too hairy. It is a little strange to see a woman with extremely hairy legs...
I have never the need to shave as my legs aren't that hairy, but hairy nevertheless. I find it a little sad that women are pressured to put a lot of effort into being as hairless as possible; hahaha no one wants a furry human.

It feels stronger because when it grows back from shaving the hair is blunt.

I don't have to shave because I only have light hairs but I felt so sexy after I first did it (my skin was so sensitive and the sensation so intense) I do it anyway. But lotions and potions might do the same.

Shaving is like a 2min fix -I don't believe it does more harm, you just notice it more when it grows back coz its sharp.

I don't mind if there is hair there, as long as it's not so much that it's visible. A woman should not be "burly", but I don't want a plastic barbie doll either.

You should. If you want to be more feminine. But yes, if you don't shave your legs often, they do grow back thicker.
