Is it normal that i'm addicted to scratching my thumb?

I have this strange addiction that i scratch the sides of my thumbs. First, I started with my right thumb about five years ago. Then I started with my left thumb a year ago. I scratch them with sharp objects but mostly with zippers. It may sound strange but I move apart two of the teeth of the zipper and scratch my thumbs between them... I do that when I'm bored or I study or read something. I just can't concentrate without it! What can I do to stop it because my skin is really thick? I'm a girl and I don't like seeing my hands like this!!!

It's just a habit, like cracking your knuckles or drumming your fingers. I crack my wrists and my knuckles when I'm trying to concentrate. If you don't like your thumbs to have calluses then you could try to stop, but calluses are really hard to get rid of. If you want to stop, snap a rubber band on your wrist really hard if you catch yourself doing it. Hope this helps ;D

  • Wear gloves? Stop doing it? Do something else with your hands when you find the urge to do it like tapping a pen. Something along those lines.

I've tried tricks like that... I end up doing it again. Trust me, it's way worse than an addiction. Thanks for the comment, btw!

      • I sucked my thumb when I was younger and my parents tried everything to stop it putting duck tape, vinegar, hot sauce, anything they could think to try they did. Nothing worked I still do it every now and then to this day. I'm not ashamed lol :)

I'm guessing you are causing damage and breaks to the skin? I'm not really sure what else to suggest especially if you have tried those options. Maybe speak to a doc

I've the same story as you... My parents tried everything they could possibly do but... no results. And yes, I'm causing damage and breaks to the skin and I'm really thinking about visiting a doc about this problem because it's become more intense than ever!!!
