Is it normal that i'm afraid of space?

I'm extremely afraid of pictures of space. Looking at pictures of the planets, gallaxies and the sun creep me out. I cant look at it. It freaks me out. Also, the idea of empty space. It scares me that the universe is almost all empty space. I cant look at it. Is this normal?

It's not that rare of a phobia. I found some statistics about it:

It is scary to think of something so vast and unexplainable, but it is also beautiful.

I understand what you mean, and I think this phobia is normal. Space is so immense and some parts of it are unknown. Also, it's pretty dangerous considering that it's dark and for all you know you're heading for a black hole. Personally, I wouldn't really want to go into space, but I do want to visit other planets.

What bothers me more than any of that is the fact that it's supposedly never ending. It just goes and goes and goes forever. That's difficult for me to wrap my head around. And when you get far enough out there is just blackness and dark. The Big Bang only threw stellar gas and particles so far and the universe has only expanded so far since. And eventually, since it's still expanding, everything would be so far apart from everything else, it might as well all be empty and black then.

Don't worry though. Unless you are being abducted by aliens on a regular basis or work for nasas flight engineer program or something, you'll be fine. You'll never have to worry about the cold dark endless expanse of nothing.

No one can hear you scream. It's the most inhospitable natural environment we know of. You puff up like a peep in the microwave without a pressure suit and o2. And FUCK those gloves you wear, they're IMPOSSIBLE to use a pressure. It's like having ur hands encased in drying cement and u gotta move them. There are grains of sand being hurled around the planet at 17000 miles an hour. Guess what happens when one of those hits you in a lightly kevlared joint? It goes through the suit, and your body like it wasn't even there. It's a fear humanity needs to fully conquer if we are to survive. This planet will NOT sustain us for ever. Unless we find a new one to infect we will be done-zo.

I completely understand your phobia. When I was younger I was scared of all the same things, but the more I learned about it the more beautiful it got.

I love space, i think its beautiful. But yes, its normal. The idea of outerspace, because its so huge, IS overwhelming.

But (and I'm being an ass here) technically space isnt empty. Its filled with dark matter.

Space is just an empty void; an illusory entity by nature projecting it's own likeness into our primordial desires more native to our being than skin and bone.

Lol jk, you cray cray dawg.

The Universe is such a vast and unknown thing, not to mention the appearance of some of these celestial objects are out of this world (no pun intended). So of course its normal to be scared of it all. I'm fascinated by space because its just so unknown to us.

That's the weirdest phobia I heard in a while.

'Nothingness' is actually very scary. That is why 'dark' is considered to be bad. So that could be it.

When I was 6, I saw the movie "Men In Black" and ti scared me, so I was afraid of space for fear aliens would eat me.

Ever since I studied astro physics back in college I have had quite an interest in all things to do with space even though I don't study this stuff anymore. The idea of space and time being so limitless just reminds us how insignificant this planet and everything on it is, in about 1 billion years all life on this planet will be dead due to the rising temperature of the sun and in about 5 and a 1/2 billion years the planet itself will be destroyed when the sun turns into a red giant, this is going to happen no matter what anybody does.

Yes true, but people have only been around for about 200,000 years (or 6,000 if you're Christian Lol)
So if we 'evolve' further (or likely become extinct) then it may not be all that catastrophic for anyone.

Stars exploding is quite natural, its all part of our universe.
By the way our galaxy is also set to collide with another galaxy before our sun dies, so we may be able to hop onto another planet passing by!

Oh wait, even our own planet is in space.
I thought the only people scared of the universe and its unknowns were religious people!

I love seeing beautiful pictures of nebula and galaxies and planets etc etc etc. I seriously love space, I could float in it happily for the rest of my life (obviously meaning more than the known 1 minute that anyone would survive in space without any life support)

Scared of space? You need to see more of its beauty.

I really hate to scare you more than you're already scared, but all the things (mass) in the Universe, are mostly empty space, including yourself. You can ask any Professor of Physics this, and they will verify this.

It's normal. It scares me that there's no gravity and many dangers in the universe including the lack of oxygen. I think it's beautiful to look at and very complex. Maybe, you shouldn't go on Google Sky, I've found many "Strange Things" on there O_0

What? I love space! My father told me not to long ago that in a couple of years we'd be able to take short trips to space. I can't wait to go! I love space.

There's a company working on making space flight as affordable as an airline ticket. I saw a TV programme on it the other day.
