Is it normal that i'm intimidated to finish my own story?

I was looking through the documents on my computer and opened up a story I started on a few years back. After reading through it, I remembered how much I loved it. Problem is, I'm afraid to start writing on it again. For some reason, I have this fear that I will screw it up. It's been a while since I've written on it. I've been writing another story lately, and that one isn't coming out as good as I would like it to. Other than that, I haven't really been writing much at all, and I'm afraid I'm going to finish it and mess up everything I had going. Has this happened to any of you guys before?

  • write more than one ending , this could take the pressure off having the perfect "one"

    • Thank you for the advice but, it's not that I'm afraid of how it's going to end. I still remember how I wanted it to end and I want to stick to that, but I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to write it the same way as I did before. You know what I mean? For example, this story is written in first person. I'm afraid I won't be able to write in the character's voice the way I did earlier.

Maybe do some practice writings trying to get back into the voice of the character you were using. Like do "journal entries" or write some little side stories of that character to warm up and get used to the feel of them again, before you start working on your actual story.

This bothers me all the time. I write so much differently than I did when I was younger. I read some of my stuff and I can't even believe I wrote it. I mean in a good way. I am so braindead now. Anything I didn't finish back then, I no longer think I can. Anything I start now, I don't think will be any good.

    • That's exactly how I feel. When I read it, I can see that I was more comfortable writing it than the things I write now.

Exactly. And some of it, you wonder how you could write better when you knew less.
