Is it normal that i pissed away my first year of college?

I did ok my first semester. I partied on a normal basis but still attended most days of class. I failed one class. Second semester rolled around and I started feeling down. I was diagnosed with depression. I didn't ever leave my room unless it was for a party. It's finals week and I've already missed two finals. I feel like I've given up and I keep hoping for next semester but I'm scared it will be the same. Will it get better? Is it normal for only the first year of college?

Yes, it'll get better. What you did is so common, it could almost be seen as normal. I did the same myself, by the way.

Depression is often a natural product of screwing up. And you're screwing up. This isn't a judgement but statement of fact. you know it, or you wouldn't have written this. I myself began college as a screw-up. Part of that had to do with drinking too much, but part of it was just being disorganized. My best advice: don't go back to your dorm/apartment after class. go straight to the library and bang out 2 hours of work. That way your afternoon won't be a big time suck of nothing. you'll do better and ironically have more time to go out and party.

You're depressed. You associate failure with The finals so you party, because partying makes you happy and feel better about yourself. Does your college know about your depression? Perhaps, they'll let you make up for your tests? See the school therapist or talk to a close friend. Depression is normal. It can be chronic or a one time thing. It happens and eventually it will pass. In the time being, start writing or take up art. Both can be good ways to channel your feelings.

    Good luck:)

Not something I did, but I hear about this so often that I can't say that you're abnormal. You're still adjusting to life without your parents and the freedom that comes along with it. It's normal.

Yup. Bang out 3 hours of work in the library every afternoon. It worked for me.
