Is it normal that i play with my shoelaces

I play with my shoe laces, in particular i play with the aglet (the small plastic tip) i crush it inbetween my fingers on the webbing, subconciously so much so that the plastic can become sharp and cut my skin and leave it very dry and broken. Ive done it since i was a child. Anyone know why i would do that?
