Is it normal that i rub things between my fingers for comfort?
Okay, so I know it's not a normal thing, and I'm guessing it's not too common based on my experience of reactions from people who I'll do out in the open around, but I'm wanting to know if there's a name for why I do it? I'll explain some below. I'm pretty much just looking for comments.
I'm currently 21 and for as far back as I can remember, around 4, I've always rubbed things between my index finger and thumb. Either hand. As a kid, I used to have a Kleenex box by my bed for the sole purpose of rubbing them between my fingers, having to get a new one once I'd worn it out. But it could only be certain kinds. (No lotions, pretty much cheap ones that are easy to slightly separate by rubbing.) I also had a baby blanket that had a layer of fabric that gave off the same effect. Paper towel, paper napkins, worn out tags, and satin coat linings all work. I even used to put a layer of Elmer's glue on my hands and peel if off once it dried and then kind of folded it so the textured sides touched. Mainly though, I have a pillowcase that I use for this purpose and this purpose only. It's not even on a pillow. I'll throw it in my purse when I leave the house.. I don't use it when people are around though, like in public. I'm only comfortable enough to do this out in the open (with my pillow case) around my parents, sister, and close friends. Because I know its weird. That's where tissues and such are much better substitutes out and about.
I don't know if this is a sensory issue with textures or if it's some kind of weird psychological thing that must have developed when I was young. I've had and currently have anxiety issues but I can remember doing this well before all my anxiety issues started as a child.
