Is it normal that i spell out words with my eyes?

Ever since I was a little kid, I've done this thing where I spell things with my eyes. It's kind of hard to explain. You know how if you are in a dark room with a small light (like a night light) and you move your eye, you will get a streak of light kind of burned into your vision for a second? Well, I use that streak of light and move my eyes in the shape of letters, so that I can see the letters in that streak of light for a second and I spell out words.

I used to only do it in the dark, but now I do it ALL THE TIME and I have been for YEARS. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm doing it until someone notices and thinks I am having a seizure or something. If I'm watching TV and the person on TV says "hello" I will just automatically start spelling "hello" with my eyes. I can't help doing it. I can do different kinds of "handwriting" too. I can do it in cursive or all caps or normal...and I do it with any type of small light or object.

I've never met anyone else who does this and everyone I've told thinks its so weird! My family makes fun of me for it. Has anyone else ever done this? Is it normal?

Haha thanks everyone. I'm glad you all think it sounds so cool, cause it looks pretty weird when I actually do it! It is fun to do though and I doubt I will stop anytime soon. The quest to meet another eye-speller in the world continues! :)

That's pretty awesome, as far as I'm concerned. Your family is terrible for ostracising you but, it is quite typical for humans to respond negatively towards things they don't understand/fear.

OMG!! I can't believe there is someone else who does this!! I have spelled out words with my eyes since I was like 5 years old...... cursive, all caps and regular too! You did a good job of describing it! Ha ha! Have you ever realized that when you are spelling the words, your eyes(if they had a pen attached and were actually writing) would write the spelled word backwards!!?!?

I often type on an imginary keyboard with my fingers, so I think its possibly just a way of calming yourself down, like biting your nails.

It's not normal but it's definitely awesome. Don't worry what people say, it's very interesting and you're doing no harm.
I'm going to try this at some point.

When I'm bored I trace things with my eyes, I see no problem with either if our habits

  • I write out words with my toes sometimes when I am bored or in a lecture. But I have never done it with my eyes...Do you want to stop?
