Is it normal that i surf the internet in between tasks @ work?

I'll do a task, then go on a site that I like for 5, then do a task, then go on a site for 5, and so on. I feel incredibly guilty doing it but I have very high productivity and I dont take cigarette breaks.... is that enough justification lol, I dont know.
Anyway I was wondering if other people do this .... I have a desk job obviously.

I manage my own time but I'm expected to document progress daily or explain why there isn't any. Often I know I'm going to have to work an hour or two over (unpaid) because I've underestimated how long it's going to take me to do something. If I then spend ten minutes an hour not working, I know that I'm staying three to three and a half hours late, instead of one or two. Sometimes you need to turn off for ten minutes to make yourself more productive. It's very much left to me, though. I know how my mind works best. From the management side, if my performance is found wanting on any three separate occasions, I'm sacked. So the pressure is very much on me to manage myself well.

I do this too! But my productivity is seven times higher than what it has to be, and I far exceed everyone else's productivity within my department. So I don't feel so bad :-)

So long as the job gets done on time, go ahead. If you want a promotion though, you could just not waste time and tell your boss when you finish early. S/he will see that you are a great worker, and you might get promoted if they're impressed. If you don't have those ambitions, just enjoy your random surfing.

As long as you're staying on task it's ok. I used to procrastinate on the Internet at skool lol

    • Sometimes, I admit, yes it is. Before a daunting filing task.... or in between data entry. Thank you for confirming that suspicion.

I think it depends on the workplace and what sites you are looking at. I surf the net at work all the time. Usually it is something I can loosely define as research. Last time my boss caught me doing it he asked me to email him the link. But I don't think my workplace is very typical.

    • Yeah probably depends, I work in a fairly lax environment that way. A lot of my co-workers do it, but I was wondering if it was normal across other Agencies. I guess not in yours........ now Im curious as to where you work... I dont expect you to answer that tho ;)

In all fairness, part of my job requires me to keep current on specific issues. I am sent lots of links to follow and check the validity of. I also screen potential business partners by examining their websites. Sometimes they lead me to strange places.

        • True, sometimes I find myself in strange places while doing research.... I guess thats to be expected to an extent. I guess if investigating a potential partner leads you to a virus it would be a deal breaker lol.
