Is it normal that i talk to kids as equals?

If you've read To Kill A Mockingbird, I talk to kids in a way similar to Atticus Finch. I don't feel that the words we say to them should be excessively watered down. Of course, some things just have to be simplified and brought down, but in general, I talk to them with the same respect and level as other people. Normal or no?

I hate it when people use "baby" voices with children. Speak normally, you are teaching them language and communication.

I always try to respect children and speak to them as if what they have to say is important and valid. Not every subject is suitable for them, but the same is true of my grandmother.

Yer I think kids understand a lot more than we give them credit for.

i actually find this quite hillarious and plan on raising my kids this way. Just talk to them as if they were grown ups. Example if your 3 year old is freaking out in public just tell them to grow up and walk away while keeping an eye on them to make sure they arent kidnapped

Generally when I am with kids I treat them like I would another person my age. However certien topics I will never talk about around younger kids. Kids tend to like me but I kind of feel a need to take care of everyone since im the oldest child.

Not normal but a great idea! How do we learn if we're treated like babies???

Generally children are more intelligent than adults so it's understandable.

  • That's the best when I was little I was always well read and people used to say I had an old head on young shoulders my parents never ever told me lies if I asked was the tooth fairy not real they said yes when I asked them where babies come from they told me the truth about sex and everything and I was only 7 years old and it made me feel grown up and I don't act childish like most people my age does

I love that book and Atticus Finch is such a cool dad, I'd say treat the person the age they act

One of my favourite books, by the way.

I agree with you to an extent. I like the way Atticus talks to his kids. But there are some subjects that would traumatise kids. And you also have to moderate vocabulary. Then again, I moderate my vocabulary with adults too.

That's completely normal but alot of kids are smarter then they look so be careful and make sure to only break things down for the kids whoneed it because if you break it down for the kids who don't need it they notic and get offended. Trust me. I've done it. Not a happy sight.
