Is it normal that i think i'm better than most blacks?

I have never spoken AAVE (African American vernacular English), and I always have spoken standard American English. People throughout elementary, middle, and high schools have said," You talk like a white girl" and similar things.

The way I dress as well. I dress in USA polo assn, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Hollister, Ecko unltd, etc. I don't too much about the stereotype of how white people dress, but they'd make fun of me for this too.

And the last thing is how I act. I'm not ghetto or ratchet at all. I'm very quiet. Peers would call me dumb and retarded for being quiet. I guess because quiet used to mean dumb, and idiots still believe so. Not being ghetto like the others= acting white somehow.

Either way, I have let it get to me, because when I would ask people about this, they'd say I'm not like the others and that I'm better. They say I can get a better job and get even further in life than someone else who doesn't act good.

TL;DR: I apparently act, dress, and talk white. Since I was in elementary, middle, and high schools, people would say that. I believe I'm better than most black people because of this, since people inadvertently told me that is so.

You wouldn’t be the first American POC to think you’re better than your school peers just because you’re essentially a snowflake. Some of the best Black Americans didn’t think they were better than their other Black Americans because they spoke, dressed or acted differently. What you’re feeling is resentment towards your peers. Hopefully you’ll grow out of it for the better. Otherwise it’ll consume you and foster negative and unnecessary attitudes towards others who are culturally, ethnically different from your image of yourself. The better person would shrug off those negative comments and use their skills to help others.

I don't disagree with you, but it's easier said than done. It's going to be a lot harder if OP was bullied for being different.

Yes, sadly it is normal to have internalised racism.

I can somewhat relate to this, except I'm Hispanic and live in a ghetto town full of Hispanics.

  • Hi there
YES YES YES! Black doesnt mean ghetto. However, im gonna have to disagree with you there about sometimes feeling higher than some black people. First of all, I cant talk for true black people in general (Im mixed raced. Italian-carribean) and ive always been in two different worlds.
On one hand, i had my white friends, and when i was younger, i hung around them a lot. And on the other hand, i have my black friends.

And the most frustrating thing is, most mixed people i know (especially kids) just hang out with white people and SEE THEMSELVES AS WHITE AND COMPLETELY IGNORE THEIR BLACK SIDE. that is hella mad.
sorry to break it to ya hun, but you cant "Quote on quote "Dress white". How you speak, how you dress, unless its traditional clothing or a native language, you cannot dress like a race, or speak like a race of people.
