Is it normal that i think i'm not a good artist when others say i am?

Most times I find myself wanting to be a better artist. Everyone says that I'm GREAT but I think otherwise. Being artistic runs in my family but I'm just not satisfied with my skills. Am I being modest or am I just that self-conscious?

It's quite hard to answer your question without examining your artistic work, but it's always good to strive to be better at something.

I find it hard to accept the compliments of other people, as I prefer to seek validation from my own personal judgment.

Everybody does that. It doesn't mean your art is bad, it just means you are able to do better. I do a lot of drawing and i critisize my art a lot. When other people say my art is good, i think that they are lying.

I'd love to exchange artwork and ideas on art with anyone here who draws or paints. I'd done alot of painting and drawing.

it's really easy to pick out flaws in your own work and dwell on them. I'm sure you're actually a pretty good artist, and you're just being hard on yourself and comparing yourself to others who have more experience. I'd suggest keeping a portfolio of your work over the years, and whenever you feel like something you made isn't very good, look at how you've improved over time

I myself think m not a pretty good one either whilist others say i am. And i think it is a good thing. For me i know of what i am capable, but never am i ever satisfied with my work which makes me try harder for the satisfaction resulting in an amazing output eventho it still doesnt satisfy thyself.

Yes, it is normal. I'm sure that your work is actually rather good. I'm the same, as my family members often tell me that my work is amazing for someone my age, though I just feel as though they're lying because they do not want to hurt my feelings.

Very normal. Most creative people are very self-critical. If they weren't they wouldn't have gotten where they are and they wouldn't get any better. I get a lot of compliments on my work and I hate most of it myself. I know I'm not bad, but I know I could be better, and that's why I keep pushing myself and things stay interesting.
But keep in mind that it's totally okay not to be the best and even the worst work has value if you learned something from it. Never beat yourself up for making mistakes.

And if someone compliments your work it's best to just smile and say thanks. It'll make both of you feel good.

It depends on who "everyone" is: if it's your friends and family they could just be being nice or it may in fact be true. I wouldn't rely on their opinions but on those of unbiassed experts in art because they have no reason to not be totally honest with you.

I think that's pretty normal, since I've heard artists say that before. You're being modest, just make sure to keep it in check. Some people ruin themselves by thinking that their art is crap, robbing everyone else of solid gold. Don't stop becoming better, and please don't throw your art into a fire!

Yes. People are politically correct idiots who can't even bear to say something critical of someone else. When I fail at something, I would prefer to have people insult me and call me a fucking idiot than say "nice try".

But, unless you show us your artwork, then I can't really answer your question.

Wow. I don't like Seth MacFarlane's work much either, but that's no need for you to attack him personally.

There's nothing wrong with being an over achiever.

Feminist: A man-eating tigress; a female with all the vices of women and none of the virtues; a woman who couldn't find a man and couldn't even get work as a whore.
