Is it normal that i think school is a waste of time?

I'm currently enrolled in a really competitive academic high school. I hate that we learn a bunch of shit we never apply to in real life or help us any way at all, and that all my classmates regard their marks like it's life or death. The worst part about school is, I'm not even interested in any of the things we're taught. Why even bother going to school if I'm just going to end up pursuing some job I hate? I want to be treated as a human being, not a robot programmed to do whatever society tells us to do!

Of course school is a waste of time, why is it so important to know physics anyway? Who cares about history? and chemistry, where can you possibly apply it?

By the way, I don't want any onions on my burger, and I'm sure even with first grade math knowledge you can calculate how much I own.

Ahem, physicist? Historian? Chemist? It might not seem important for everyone else, but it is. Imagine learning to drive without a basic understanding of momentum. Imagine how many mistakes we'd make over and over again if we weren't taught about Hitler. And think about how much rotten food we'd try eating if we didn't have an understanding of what was wrong with it! The only problem I have with the public education system is that they don't teach enough. I lose even more faith in humanity whenever I meet someone who genuinely doesn't care about learning. Insert Carl Sagan quote about scientific curiosity here.

I'm kind of in agreement with nighmare28, except I want onions on my burger.

Seriously? School is a waste of your time? How do you grow into the person you are without any education? How can you make intelligent decisions and react to the world around you in an intelligent manner? Can you imagine a world in which nobody was educated?

The problem is that your school emphasizes competition.
School is supposed to be about learning.

Eh, I appreciate learning about the world, even if I will never apply that knowledge. But the thing is, I have applied a few of the things that I have learned in school.

If you don't want a job or anything, just drop out of society in general. Part of me enjoys that discipline and persistence that I gain from doing shit that I kind of don't want to do. I enjoy learning, and I enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of the world, but school fucking sucks anyway XD

If you choose to live in poverty, you will still need skills. Like how to fix your own car, fix your trailer, hunting, gardening, keyboard skills, how to brew your own beer, etc. So learn math, and learn to write well.

I only need division, addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The only math skills i use in the every day life. Not to mention, they are teaching us pike we're gonna take their place or something.
    I wanna be writer.

You people can decide you'd rather have the education of a five-year-old, but I want to see you treating five-year-olds as your peers from now on, since you believe you haven't gained any important knowledge since you started school. All of you have lost all of my respect in saying you don't care about learning. Sure, school doesn't teach you much; if you were saying you'd rather they taught you more, that would be fine. But you're not. You're saying it would be better to skip it altogether. Who will move humanity forward if nobody cares anymore? Who will invent that hoverboard that was promised to us in 2015? Who will build the first teleporter? Invisibility chamber? Personal jetpack? Nobody, that's who. KNOWLEDGE IS THE FUTURE. Indifference is the gretest roadblock to overcome if we want to keep moving forward.

most high schools are crap (even the expensive ones - i've been to a few).

i dropped out eventually, got my ged, and got into college early. guess what - even the crappy little community colleges are FAR better than any high school! sure, you learn a lot of things that might seem not be applicable to everyday life, but if you have a good prof, they will make it interesting, actually engage in discussion with the class, and SHOW you why it IS applicable.

seriously, i thought i hated history for the longest time... it became one of my favorite subjects (with one professor, anyway). he didn't just make it about memorizing dates and names - it was more focused on the underlying ideology of the people, and how those ideologies shaped history. it became abundantly clear that history is cyclical, and the same crazy-ass bullshit that one couldn't imagine happening ever again, does and IS.

honestly though, try taking a couple of summer courses (or even just sitting in on a couple) at a local college or uni.

most the schools I went to were complete and utter krap . Most them were biest and favored certeien children over the others most the staff never cared what was going on with its students and basicly it was kids ruled kids thier was never any kindve structure and most the cares did not care if kids were beating each other . So overall all the schools I been too are krap so if 10 out of 11 is krap I have no faith in the school systems at all .I been to diffrent highschools and have yet to start collage and I am too suprised when they siad guess what no matter what classes you take in highschool you start again from algebra and if you skip that class even if given permission to you miss the chance to other needed exams that will be needed when you take the last of your four year which I think is wrong . Why do they puniush you for being smart enough to skip a class I basiclly have completely given up on all schools I have no faith in any of these systems I went to classes were the teacher never teaches this was highschool she tell you do your work and if you didnt she screech and if you asked a question she would think your imcopotant and everyday she would tell everyone to go kill themselves becuase we were basicly all shit and are gonna be losers on the street anyhow . I guess thats a normal and its wrong to care but this did not teach anything and I think cussing at your kids to go die and thier worthless and stupid , I dont know should poeple be forced to go to a highschool were thier told thier worthless will never learn and to go die everyday ? Is that what teachers are suppose to do ?

I'd like to see math classes teaching students how to manage their taxes and apply math to REAL LIFE situations, chances are Pythagoras Theorem or algebra will be much help.

It's normal. I'm in college now and I deeply resent that core classes are basically repeating everything you've already learned in high school. I didn't like that stuff in high school, and I don't like it now. Maybe try a technical college/school later on, something that teaches actual skills and not just academic check-the-squares.

I think what's more important than the actual info they're teaching is that they're teaching you how to learn and study, they make you cram all kinds of crap into your head whether your interested in it or not because like it or not you're not always going to be doing something you like or care about.

How do you know what knowledge you are going to need!!

Education is easily carried and it's up to you whether you use your qualifications or not - but at least you have a choice whereas others don't.

Not too long ago I got an e-mail from a school friend thanking me for helping him at Maths in school. He now works for NASA!! Whoever thought he'd leave Ireland for NASA??

I'm on the exact same boat as you. I challenge myself and take a lot of hard classes, however, it is frustrating knowing that book smarts won't go towards anything. Social skills appear to be more applicable to the real world. I hate how we school isn't like college where we actually learn things that are useful for out future. I really dislike school, but I like learning.

  • I have yet to use a single piece of knowledge that I was taught in HS in real life.

Not one single subject or factoid.

It really is a waste of time. Every year for every grade. They teach you the exact same things. It's a bit of a rip-off but society makes it out that at certain age not going is seen as neglect on the parents part. Not much of it is needed for life. Some of it is good to know, but you could probably learn more by going online or walking around a city. You end up having to go to "art oriented" schools to focus on the things you want which costs more money. In japan and England their education system makes more sense than over here and they seem to be doing allot better than we are. Just work hard and go to college. Than major in the things you want to do.
