Sometimes I'll read about a disorder and think "that sums me up perfectly! That would make so much sense!" Then if I find out it's likely I don't have it, it's disappointing.

Maybe it's because I'm looking for something to explain what I perceive to be wrong with me, and a diagnosis would remove that uncertainty and confusion. Without one it's like a big, stressful question mark.

This only really applies to some mental disorders though. I don't think I have anything wrong with me physically, just psychologically :P Maybe it's still a mild case of hypochondria though.

It sounds as though hypochondria is something you have, which is neat, because it's a disorder :) Success!

        • Dissociative disorder and depression both exist within the Bi polar spectrum anyway. Schizophrenia maybe?

I think it's normal, but it's not a great habit to get into. If you're really worried about a specific symptom you have, talk to a doctor.

If you have anything, it is White Coat Syndrome. Look that up.

            Huh, OK.
Quit trying to figure out if there is shit wrong with you, psychology students do this all of the time. If there was something wrong with you, you'd know by now.

Sometimes, this isn't a good thing. I did this when I was feeling ill in Europe and came under the impression that I had a massive blood clot in my leg. If it were true, by the time it took for me to convince my relatives that I needed medical help, I would've been dead!!!! 1 or 2 years ago, I did this and came under the impression that I had Bipolar Disorder:/

Sometimes, doing this is a good thing, but do not become "closed-minded". Take all possibilities in consideration:)

Have you heard of hypochondria? Look it up and see if you think you have it.

    • I think I might have it.....Ugh why did you do this to me?!

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I do this, but I always have a 99% feeling that I won'y have the disorder. I have been told I have some personality dissorders by people on this site and people in real life, and some on here, for some reason, think I have a mental dissorder (Psychopathy). Although some of my behaviors run under some of the personality dissorder traits, I know taking an online description of a dissorder shouldn't make you think you are diagnosed with the dissorder, nor is it relable.

I still believe that I don't have any mental or personality dissorders, regardless of what some others think.

    • The difference with me is that I'm 99% sure I might have the disorder, and if I don't have it,I'll become sad. Weird shit.

No, it's not a good thing to do. Self checking for symptoms is a good way to make yourself think you have something when you don't.

I went through a period of trying to self diagnose with psychological journals, but it's just too ambiguous. Now I leave that shit to the professionals.
