Is it normal that i try to make male teachers father figures?

Hi:) well to get to the point, I never really had a male role model - or any respectable male in my life for that matter. I was physically abused by my father and never thought of him as any more than a provider. So I guess when ever I get the chance I cling to the men in my life with paternal attributes. This means teachers, friends dads, etc. Is this normal?

Given your back story I think it is understandable. However, I would just like to say that, while there are plenty of nice guys out there, I think you should strive to be your own role model. Be the person the person that you want to be.

Yes, it is, considering your background. It's good that you realise what you're doing, though. It's good to be aware of these behaviours. I also have had some male role model issues! Lots of people do and it's ok. You just have to work them out. Some people do what you do and they don't even realise : /

I think it's understandable, given what's happened in your life.

I think it's normal, but don't over-psychologize it. Remember psychoanalysis isn't science, it's just speculation. And for all I know, every woman has some degree of attraction for father-like men, not only those who suffer abuse. Don't let that experience define you, and ruin your life.
(I could add that I didn't live with my father, so in school I used to be close to some male teachers, because I wanted to know what means to be a man. I'm a guy and it wasn't sexual, I just needed some male model, and I was very conscious of that.)

I believe that most teachers view and treat their students very similarly as they would their own kids. We have all had those teachers that bent over backwards to help students be successful, listened to them, offered sound advice, and acted as a positive role model.

Like you, I also have regarded some of my teachers as parental-type figures. Except for my high school French teacher... She was way too cute. Regarding her as any sort of family member would have ruined a young boy's dreams.

Well it's not normal. But it's like they said understandable. I did the same thing with other people's parents because I never had a mom and my dad died wen I was 14.
