Is it normal that i want to get fat?

Before anyone immediately clicks "not normal" without giving even a glance at what follows, please hear me out.

I am a 21 year old male who is 5'11 and weighs 180 lbs. I used to be a slim 155 lbs and used to run 6 miles a day (Mon-Fri). However, I was not pleased with my appearance. I always had found it to be more attractive/aesthetically pleasing to be round/fat/chubby. Consequently, I stopped running and pursued a less calorie-draining lifestyle. Let me be clear: I am not interesting in increasing muscle mass to gain weight. I like soft/flabby fat, even when the vast majority of you might find that repulsive/disgusting because you subscribe to the idea that what is conventionally attractive is what can only be attractive. Quite frankly, I would like to gain weight until I am around 230 lbs-250 lbs, and from there I might want to gain more depending how I feel at that weight. This is a feeling I have tried to suppress over the years in the face of public admonishment. I am well aware of the health risks that accompany being overweight/obese but do firmly believe that they can be managed or completely avoided if you continue to live a healthy lifestyle while increasing your caloric intake. Some people comment about people who have gained weight over a period of time by saying that he/she really let go. I would like to point out that I would not be letting go but rather carefully undertaking this weight gain journey with caution - being sure to stop if things do not go as smoothly as I would like. Your thoughts?

It's fine to think the polar opposite of most people. Just be careful you're not opposing popular opinion just for the sake of opposing popular opinion.

I'm pretty sure if you get too fat you will dislike it a lot. There are a lot of negative side effects to being overweight.

I applaud your honest and articulate rejection of what is 'normal' in regards to attraction. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are sheep-like and incapable of critical thinking, as many comments here reveal. However, if you are aware of the risks and measures required to maintain good health while increasing weight, i say congratulations and good luck. If there were more people with your ability to make up your own mind, regardless of direct (people, etc) or indirect (media, etc) interference, the world would be a much better place.

Don't listen to people who tell you you're not normal. A normal body is what YOU'RE comfortable and happy with. If you're not harming anyone else, do what makes you happy. I personally find larger women more attractive than skinny ones (my girlfriend is size 18). Do you think I care that the Western ideal of beauty is a size 8 or whatever. Hell no!!!

As matilda said just above, there are some really large downsides in terms of HEALTH to gaining weight. If your body frame is large and warrants carrying a bit of extra weight, of course that's what should be the case and if you're seeing bones jutting out all over the place you likely have some kind of thyroid or other issue to deal with! It's your choice to gain extra weight, obviously, either way but it will most likely result in health problems at some point down the road. Type II diabetes and hyperlipidemia are examples of VERY common eventual problems from weighing even just an extra 30-40 pounds.

I really do wish I understood why you desire to be overweight...you do realize it's almost certainly flat-out unhealthy, right? (It's not just those who are overweight even - anyone that can readily afford food consumes far more than they need, making our bodies work overtime and have certain functions always on "MAX".) I can't deny LOVING food and giving in regularly to the signals telling me to HOARD FOOD and EAT IT while I can, so I consume food even when I'm not close to hungry sometimes and if you had asked if it's NORMAL to be 230 or whatever pounds I would have said "I completely get it, it's normal". In my opinion, its a form of self-destruction to want to gain excess fat, plain and simple. Your body will not like it, if not now, later on.

My girlfriend is a slim 98 pounds, which she hates for various reasons. She tried gaining weight so she could donate blood and ended up losing a pound.

I am 6"4 and 165lbs and have been the same weight since I was about 14 years old - now 22. People used to always tell me how thin I was and how weak I looked even though I fitter than everybody I knew.
Because of that I tried to eat as much S*** as I could to gain weight, just to look stronger.
In the end I took up kickboxing, and now I have a body defined to perfection.
Some people still say I look weak, but now I have the confidence to tell them to **** off.

I would say you are fine as long as you keep your BMI under 40.

If you end up at your desired weight, everything will require so much more energy, you will sweat more, get tired easily, involves heart risk, everyday tasks will become a chore. Trying too put on weight seems a bit strange, just live life as you like and if that means you stay at the weight you are now then so be it. Don't be so obsessed with weight, it's just as bad as some ppl over obsessed with loosing weight. Be healthy and enjoy the benefits of that regardless of your weight!

I personally don't know why anyone would deliberately try to put on weight, as 99% of people want to lose weight, but whatever floats your boat. :-) But I'm going to have to vote "No" on this story.

I think you're perfectly normal. You've obviously thought this through long and hard and if you are happy to be fatter, go for it! After all, it's your body and your choice.

Honestly, im a girl and im the same way. I'm 19 and skinny but for some reason I've always had this inside urge to gain weight and ive never known why. It just feels right. I am 125 and dont think ill ever actually gain weight until im married because social standards scare me and i dont want anyone to talk about me behind my back. thats my biggest fear.

Uhh, when you get fat you wil be unhappy, and miss the days when you were skinny. Fat people end up being less patient, unhappy, with backpains. I am healthy, but i studied the side effects of being fat. It does not look fun. You dont get to look good in much clothes. Its harder to buy things,
