Is it normal that i was mean to the children raising money for charity?

My local supermarket sometimes has school children come in and pack customer's shopping bags, and in return you donate some money to their charity box.

They were there today. The cashier asked if I would like the children to pack my shopping in return for a small donation. I said no, we would like to pack our own shopping but will still donate to the box. The children looked very put out. When we left, my husband said I was being an "ice queen" and I should have let the children pack our shopping.

I fucking hate it when they pack my shopping. They are only about 8 or 9 years old so they don't have a clue how to pack shopping. They shove stuff in bags in a random order. They bruise my fruits and vegetables, they make holes and splits in packaging, and they overpack every bag so it's impossible to carry without things falling out. They basically ruin all of my shopping and it pisses me off. It also takes them a very long time.

If it matters, I donated $10 when the recommended donation was $2.

Is it normal to hate the children packing your shopping for charity? Should I have let them do it?

    It's not mean to refuse their lackluster service. You paid them their money, so that's what matters. You did nothing wrong.

    I think what you did was fine. In fact, I've done the same thing myself.

    As well as the problems you mention, I have my own system of packing shopping bags which makes it a bit easier to unpack at home, and I really dislike the coercive element of this sort of fundraising. I do understand your husband's reaction though; he responded to that pressure in the way he was supposed to and felt bad about refusing the dubious assistance of the poor little kiddies who were only trying to help.

    It was your shopping, and you had every right to refuse to let anyone else handle with it. You also had the right to refuse to give any donation at all. There are some charities that I'll never donate to because I don't agree with their aims, and I'll always feel negatively about any organisation that tries manipulate me by guilting me into donating.

    That wasn't mean, that was actually really nice. Not giving to charity isn't mean, you don't have to give to charity, it's just that it's a nice thing to do if you want to. But you did give to charity anyway, so that makes you nice.

    I don't think you were mean, I expected "actually mean". Never heard of children packing for you, but either way its up to you if you want it

    There was this young girl walking around walmart a few years ago with a bucket explaining about how shes raising money for her ballet class and was basically pan handling for money. I dont think this is a great thing to teach kids to do to be little pan handlers. The adults who ran the ballet should have been raising the money. They just normalized bumming money to the little girls.

    Fuck that, children or not, I don't want anyone serving me that isn't a paid employee. I hapilly donate, but don't need a piss poor service attached to it. I'm with you.
