Is it normal that i was one of the slowest swimmers on the team?

For four years of my life, I swam for an elite private swim club. For all the years I was there, we held the highest team score for the Junior Olympics meet in our state. I was always one of the slowest swimmers on the team and really, really struggled to keep up with everyone else. Every practice was torture and I did it for four years, all year round, most days of the week.

Sometimes, being in the company of people who are extraordinarily good at something can be discouraging. I was on a USS swim team for about seven years as a kid and teenager. I was swimming 12 hours a week and working very hard, but pushing myself meant that I was in a group with swimmers who were, for the most part, faster than me. If I hadn't done summer league as well, I think I would have believed that I was a terrible swimmer. I lost perspective to some extent anyway, I think, because I'm still sometimes surprised when I'm a better swimmer than other people. Given that I was an instructor for a while, you'd think I'd be used to it.

Anyway, that's a normal experience. Or at least, it's one that we share. Being one of the slower swimmers in your team or group can be very difficult, but a really good coach can make it a good experience anyway. I'm sorry that your experience with it was so miserable.
