Is it normal that it bothers me when my cat grooms his genitals?

I have an adult male cat, and I love him very much, and he grooms a lot, which I'm fine with - in fact, I find his grooming rather cute most of the time - but it bothers me when he grooms his genitals. I just wish he would do it in private, or when I'm not around. I feel really silly, because I know that it's the normal way animals clean themselves, but it bothers me. Is it really weird to feel this way? Or is it relatively normal?

Maybe you should talk to him about your feelings.

It is a cat: an animal. You should not be bothered of that.

it bothers me but only because cat always pauses during it while keeping his leg above his head and stares at me, after 5 to 10 second he carries on. now . I found this funny untill I watched deliverance. Everytime he does it now i get the "hey boy" scene stuck in my head

  • yes its normal, I get annoyed when dogs do that, especially the nose it makes...but to look at it another way its shows cat is as relaxed as can be in their surroundings. I just ignore it or leave the room when it happens

Animals do not see it as a issue bathing in public. It normal it bothered you but he is just staying clean. Would you rather you have to clean it everyday? Animals unlike humans do not see an issue with bathing themselves in public. So just move him when he is doing it or drop him in another room.

our society teaches us that our genitals are private and somehow different than our nose, ears, eyeballs, etc...animals have no such cultural learning...they just are cleaning whatever needs cleaning...

I guess it is a bit unpleasant to see, but just try not to look at him when hes doing that next time. Its not a sexual thing, hes just trying to keep clean. X3

Get him neutered. And be grateful for toilet seat lids otherwise you could end up seeing something worse!
