Is it normal that my “new boss” is like this?

I applied for a job at a cosmetics company. The job advertisement looked pretty ok. After two interviews I got hired. The thing is that I just found out that the owner of the company was, or maybe still even is, a scammer. He owned several webshops that offered products for weight loss. Obviously these products don’t work but people fell for it. The owner was writing his own positive reviews and negative reviews got deleted. A lot of people never got their products delivered. Mad customers that wanted their money back even got threat calls from the owner. (And obviously never got their money back)

I applied for the job at his new company. The owner told me that the company was doing really well. the company also has got a webshop, offering some cosmetic products, and I know that the reviews of the products that the webshop offers are also fake reviews. I first did not really care about it because I think a lot of companies write their own reviews but now that I found out that he even used to threat people and stuff I feel like I don’t wanna work for him no more. I feel like his new company will go down the same way as his previous company and that he‘ll still be selling bullshit.

Tho I’ve seen his new office and it really looks like he has put a lot of money and effort in it and that he really cares about his new company. So perhaps he learned from his mistakes? I also really need the money. But I got a gut feeling that he won’t be giving me any money because to me it now feels like he is a fake and a liar.

I haven’t signed anything yet and haven’t started working yet.

What do I do? Do i decline the job opportunity?

    Trust your gut: you know he's been scamming the public, so why would't he scam his employees? And do you want to be a party to his scamming operations?

    If you have any integrity yourself and you have evidence against him, pass it on to the relevant authorities.

    Scammers rarely change their spots; they just do the normal psychopathic thing and learn new tricks to keep the scam running longer.

    Unless you're a forensic accountant and you've been able to study the accounts of this latest business and satisfy yourself that everything is above board, you'd be wise to assume that the glitzy office has been paid for with other people's money. They may believe that they've invested in a business with huge potential, but actually they're merely the initial victims of his current scam. Or maybe they're using it as a front for money-laundering. Who knows? It's pretty certain that you don't.

    It's always a good idea to trust your gut instincts. Sometimes they lead us astray, but going with your feelings on this one would be the path with least risk, so I suggest you go that way.

    It might be a good idea to keep an eye on the business, just to see if your instincts were right or wrong. Live and learn.

    If he is a scammer it is likely he will cheat you eventually.

    Look for a different job.

    If you need money and this is paid, do it. You're not harming anyone and no one is harming you.
