Is it normal that my acne meds "cleared" half of my face?

DFor about 2 years or so, I've been treated with Doxycycline (I forget the dosage but I do remember that my doctor had increased it.) and from what it looks like, only half of my face is "cleared" of acne but I still have scars. While the other side of my face has constant flare-ups of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. My doctor suggested that it's not a strong enough dosage and recommended my for Accutane. Is there some sort of reason as to why only half of my face was fine and the other wasn't or is this normal?

  • You should not take Doxycycline on a long term basis because it is an antibiotic. You will soon develop a resistance to antibiotics and then they will not work as good when you really need them for a more serious illness. Doxycycline is good for treating the clap. Accutane is good at treating bad acne but is known for causing crohns disease in a lot of people. Google it if you don't believe me.

Does this mean I've become immune to Doxycycline and if I actually get the clap, it won't work?

As somebody who has been on both doxy and accutane, I can tell you my personal experiences.

Doxycycline will only be effective for a certain amount of time before your body builds up a resistance to it. Most doctors won't tell you this and will keep prescribing it. It also effects the liver which can last for almost 6 months in some people. I went on two courses of doxy - both for about four months. The first time, my acne cleared completely, but that wasn't the result of the meds alone. My acne came back worse when I finished the course. I went on another course, it cleared up my face about 70%. After the second course, I had about 6 months of the worst acne of my life. I decided to go on Accutane as a last resort. I had a blood test before going on the Accutane and it revealed abnormal liver results - thanks to the doxy. I went on Accutane regardless.

The bottom line is that Accutane works. Don't let people scare you off with "horror stories", which are most likely absolute bullshit. Reading through forums about it may make you think it's some heavy drug which will kill you if you don't follow the pamphlet guidelines word by word. It's not. It's just like taking doxycycline, except you'll have to use eyedrops a couple of times per day and you won't have to wash your hair as often.
