Is it normal that my best friend has never read a book

My friend since her childhood has never read a novel. Not even a story book. Is that normal?

That suggests that either she has poor reading skills, she lacks the necessary imagination and intelligence necessary to get involved with fiction, or maybe she had bad experiences with reading when she was a child which mean that one of her definitions of herself now is "Not a reader."

I read voraciously as a child, and I got through books very fast. It's a long time ago now, but I'm pretty sure there were periods when I was making weekly visits to the library to check out new books to replace the ones I'd steamed through.

But then my parents had this weird idea that television was virtually all crap, and we didn't have a TV in the house until I was around 16 years old, so reading was my only escape.

There are so many other distractions these days that are superficially much shinier than a boring old book and require zero mental effort, so I wouldn't be shocked if your friend is becoming typical for younger people.

Most teenagers still read a lot. I mean I do and most of my friends are pretty well read

...I thought that school English lessons require novel reading. At least that's what happens at my school. So if she attends a school, she should have read some books, even if it's just school-required-reading-books.

Or did you exclude school-required-reading-books in the question?

Does she have a reading/learning disability? Like dyslexia?

    • No, she is ok. But her reading skills are bad coz she doesn't read at all. Just when she is asked to read by the teacher.

Strange. Maybe she must compensate with reading online articles, newspaper, magazines, or even a kindle. Surely she must learn from somewhere and I'm pretty sure even schools say to read stuff for homework

        • Yeah, kinda. She can't even read diary of a wimpy kid. She just looks at the drawings.

Plenty of people don’t read much. But to have literally never read a single book, that’s crazy. That being said, I’m afraid this sort of person might be becoming more normal as time goes on.

These kids are juiced off the junk tree.

I don't think it's normal, but I like to read. I can't imagine why someone would not enjoy reading to tell you the truth.

    However, I mostly read nonfiction.

I don't think kids these days even know what a book is, hell I didn't even start reading a book till I was about 15 out of boredom when I was taking a 30+ minute shit. Just kept reading it every trip to the bathroom.
