Is it normal that my cat hates being brushed?

Every year when the weather gets warmer, my cat starts to moult a lot, which causes her fur to matt up and get clumpy. We try to brush her but she hates this, and tries to walk away from us, roll on her back and sometimes she'll start hissing and gently bite us. Even with gentle brushing she seems to hate it.
I used to volunteer with at an animal shelter and most cats that weren't feral didn't seem to mind being brushed. Has anyone else experienced this with their cats? Other than this she's a friendly, happy cat, although she does get nervous when people she's never met are around. Also, does anyone have any suggestions of how we can make her hate being brushed less?

Some cats are like little kids who refuse to take baths and fight getting brushed. You can try brushing her while she's distracted with a toy or high on catnip. You might also try working your way into regular brushings by brushing her just a few seconds at a time many times a day until she can tolerate it for longer.

My cat doesn't like being brushed either, so it's not just your cat. My cat is getting used to being brushed though because I've been brushing her a lot. You need to make it part of your cat's daily routine and they will get used to it.

Well mine enjoys being brushed and starts purring. It might be the brush you are using. A lot of animal brushes are hard and made of wire. My animals don't really enjoy them and I feel it hurts them. I try buying hair combs and using that and they all seem to enjoy that. Look into buying a comb big enough for them. They are not that expensive to get. Usually pharmacy will sell combs. You might also be brushing an area that hurts them. So maybe try brushing from another direction. I know my animals get upset if I touch to low of there belly. You might be scraping there junk and dont realize it. Try this and see if it helps. You also might be pushing to hard with brush. So try what I have said. I hope this helps.

Mine used to hate being brushed when I first got him hed try to bite the brush but he likes it when my son brushes him. Apparently I brush too hard and my son does very lightly. I have very thick hair myself so it makes sense I can barely feel when I brush my hair but my son has fine hair and he brushes his hair softer(he tells me I brush too hard).
Maybe you could put some catnip on the brush or feed the cat some tuna only while brushing and kitty will associate brushing with treat/catnip.
They also have free standing self-groomers, maybe yours would rather brush herself rather than have someone brush her.

My cats don't mind being brushed, but every cat is different so it's normal.

My cat likes it. For some reason he patiently waits while I remove the occasional tick too.

Your cat sounds similar to my cat Eva. She is a rescue cat and gets a bit freaked out by things, understandably. She also has fur like cotton wool that clumps together horrendously. We found that combing her while she was eating was the best way to go about it. She gets really excited about her food being there and you're there which is a bonus and giving her attention, great! She purrs and everything. Maybe start by stroking your cat while they are eating, so they get used to the sensation and then slowly bring in the comb? First on the back, in the safe spots and then working down to the sides. Now Eva expects it with her food (not every feeding time) and enjoys it :)

Mine HATES being brushed... Although he loves tuna more so we brush him while his eating tuna.... If he is really bad thought my partner has to restrain him gently while I brush him.
