Is it normal that my cat is always growling at me??

every time i go to my cat he growls at me and when i try to pet him he opens his mouth widely and shows his teeth i think he does this to intimidate me
he is overweight so i call him fatso instead of his real name steve butt can animals learn the sound of some words after hearing it many times and know the meaning???
ps. dont start with animal abuse ok i like my cat but he is fat and i try to remind him by calling him that but sometimes i think maybe this is why he is always so angry at me because when i first met him he didnt growl when i called him steve

    Go and take a crap in your Cats litter box, that should sort out any problems / inadequacies he might have! If that fails, take him to your bathroom and piss on him, that certainly will show him you are the boss and if he does not like it let him find a new owner....get a life!

    Did he start doing it after he gained weight? I dk. I always watch the show My cat from hell and really the basics to get a cat to like you are to feed it and play with it. Maybe get a feather on a stick (I dk the correct term lol) and just swish it around for him 15 min a day. It helps a lot...or at least it helps on the show haha. I got my first cat 2 months ago. She pretty much hated me and would hiss and attack me but as I type this, she's laying on my lap calmly watching me type.
