Every time my cat is wanting attention she will start licking any part of my body that she is near. It's so peculiar. Is my cat the only one? Are there others that do the same thing? Or is my cat just special?

Cats groom each other, it's how they show that the like others, even humans. This is normal and positive.

On a side note, I watched a documentary recently where they looked at animal behaviour. They concluded cats don't form strong emotional attachments to their owners. They seek food and shelter and are gratified by being stroked, but don't care who this comes from. Dogs, on the other hand, form strong emotional bonds with their owners. It's interesting.
So cats don't particularly care about their owners. They're very independent and can be totally self-sufficient.

You might like to think that, but I bet you your cat wouldn't be bothered if you disappeared, as long as another owner replaced you :/
Both of my cats are shy to other people. So if i were to disappear and someone else took my place, surely she'd be happy as long as her bowl was filled with food-But she would not rush to the door to welcome said person home, neither would she accompany just anyone to the mailbox xD
She, the particular individual is clingy and attached to me. I don't doubt that i could be replaced with enough time and effort from another human though, but that applies to all other animals too.
ALL kitty cats are special!!! But yeah mines used to lick my nose. Cats almost always lick out of affection. I reckon if she likes one particular place over the rest its because to her cattly pallet you smell better to her there. Just be happy she ain't smellin yer crotch! lol
My cat does the same thing, but she also uses my legs when hairy as a scratching post. So I guess I shouldn't be talking.
