Is it normal that my classmates don't like me in the university??

I am a foreign student studying in the UK. Although my English is not very good , i often try to communicate with my classmates. But they never take the initiative to talk to me,even say "Hi" to me. i feel very helpless and alone in my class. What should I do to fit in university? Is it normal that foreign student will be ignored by local student?

every country has its form of prejudice and racism. racism probably isnt the case here but they may be being prejudiced. it happens a lot in my tertiary class here is australia. my class went from being mostly australian born students to half foreign students and one of my good friends in particular would say nasty things about them on breaks like "they're freaks" and "why dont they talk in class? they're so quiet. learn english" and me not being so ignorant got to know a few of them and before you know it the rest of my class followed suit and now everyone is friends in there. its not fair to judge because of a trait such as not speaking english as clear as people that have been doing it their whole lives. dont stress out about it too much. just try to relax and when people see that it doesnt bother you to be different they might warm up to you a bit. universities usually have lots of extra curricular activities so maybe try some of them :)

It doesn't matter what a bunch of random people think about you.

You will forget them after university anyways.

Comment on small things. They just dont know you, and you don't feel welcome so you don't feel comfterble. Just be nice and ask questions.good luck.

A couple of weeks ago I was at an International Society quiz where all the international students got together. I go every year because it's one of the funnest nights on my calendar. The non-English students are polite, open, friendly, funny, and I just spend the entire night laughing. I don't want to insult my country but I rarely experience that with people of my own nationality. We're serious, jaded, and a bit miserable. That's our problem, but it isn't yours. If your university has an International Society, join it as quickly as you can. Don't give up on us, though. We can be nice too. It just takes us some time to warm up.

You're grammar is well done... and people can be ass-holes. But not all of us are like that. Actually, this is the first where I heard a foreign student feels neglected.
