Is it normal that my cousins guinea pig sits still in the grass?

I remember my cousin used to have a guinea pig named Oreo who wasn't quite tame when I had visited. He would run away whenever we tried to pick him up in his cage but when we put him down on the grass he'd get really calm and stay still. He would let us pick him up too. But as soon as we put him back in the cage he'd run away and hide. IIN?

    Why don't you try living in a cage and see how much you like it.

      What's your point? I don't need to live in a cage to understand how much I would or wouldn't like it. If I lived in a cage I would not like it one bit. If I was set out on the grass, I would run like hell. That's why I don't understand why Oreo doesn't.

    1. Pets who are unaccustomed to being around people they hardly know will sometimes run away or hide from that stranger.

    2. For some beings, nature can have a very calming effect on them. Being free, getting surrounded by grass and having the wind blow through his fur must have been very relaxing to him.

    3. In the wild, animals aren't caged. They are allowed to roam free. Depending on the conditions of the cage as well as how long he was left to stay in there, could have very well attributed to him being scared of it. He might have seen it as a form of imprisonment and longed for freedom.

      Yes, he was black and white and he killed his mate while she was sleeping. How cute. ^_^
