Is it normal that my dog becomes agressive towards small children?

Ok so my dog pretty much hates everyone, shes not very social, she is friendly with my mom and a few others. When it comes to little kids though she gets extra rowdy and starts growling/barking even if the kid is across the street...

If you're smart, you'll take that bitch on a one-way ride to the pound. If she growls and barks at kids, one of these days, she's going to attack a child and you and your parents are going to find yourselves in court on the wrong side of a lawsuit! I hope your parents have a really good and big homeowners insurance policy!

That's what all dog owners say and dogs get loose from their owners all the time and attack children!

Obviously you have a somewhat aggressive dog, or at least one that wasn't taught to act appropriately around kids. It does NOT mean it should be put down - you as an owner are simply responsible to take good care and prevent sh*t from happening. Simply always take the dog out on a leash and with a muzzle, and make sure that no kids wonder into your backyard or home. Finding some good trainer might be a great solution too.

I'm not sure when this was posted, sorry if it was ages ago!
Dogs that aren't used to children will growl and bark at them, especially if they have a high prey drive. The dog sees something small, maybe running and screaming and naturally wants to attack it.
You can definitely train the dog out of this, mostly. The dog probably won't learn to love children, but can learn the appropriate way to respond to them.

If it is trying to attack it is very territorial from the sounds of it. I might ask a trainer or the vet they know how to handle animals.

Are you sure it is attacking and it is not wanting to play. Animals seem to get rowdy about kids for some reason. I can say my past experience it is usually they want to play.

I could just be the kind of dog she is or how she was raised. Some dogs have to be raised around children to get use to them. My dog is almost the same way. She just doesn't like the kids going in the yard.
