Is it normal that my dog does this?

Sometimes my dog walks over to our back door, sits down while looking out the windows of the door whining. Then with her paw she'll start scratching the door like she wants to go out. I'll go over to the door to let her out(we have an electric fence), and she just stands there staring. She doesn't go out.

  • Good point! I used to always play with my dog, but lately I haven't had the chance, because I usually have other things going on. And I noticed that if someone goes outside with her, she has no problem following. But if I'm trying to send just her out, she doesn't wanna go.

And thank you for your comment. It was really helpful.

Maybe she is getting old. And by the time you tried to let her out, she already pissed and shat herself.... Poor bitch.

Maybe your dog is losing her eyesight and is unsure about going out alone.

Fit it with an electrical collar and shock it when it scratches the door

Yes, it might e because she's afraid of the fence and doesn't want to get electrocuted or just because she wants attention.

My family had a dog that did this. We've always had a breed that is famous for being on the wrong side of any door. If they're out, they want to be in, and vice versa.

Anyway, in the case of the dog I'm talking about, it turned out to be my fault. I used to stand at the door for hours and play ball with her, kicking a tennis ball around the garden for her to fetch. Secretly, I used to aim at garden ornaments so it was a game we both got a lot of fun out of.

She associated being let out with playing (not just relieving herself) and she'd stand there looking at anyone who let her out because she wanted to play and didn't understand why they weren't getting it. Meanwhile my family is wondering why she asked to be let out when she didn't need to be.

The mystery was solved when the door was opened to let her out, and she immediately scooted upstairs and came back with a tennis ball in her mouth.

  • Thanks for the comment. I was curious because I felt like she was trying to tell me something, or if it was a sign of depression in dogs. I think she could just be getting skittish too. Shes getting old. Maybe shes wary of stepping outside by herself for some odd reason.

Yeah, I live on a property, and have barbed wire fencing, and my dog will bark at the fence, because she still remembers when it hurt her, ha ha.

My dog does it all the time, usually I feed her, that settles her down a bit.
