Is it normal that my hamster chews the bars of his cage?

At night when he is most active my hamster chews on the bars of the cage.. I mean like really trying to chew his way through them, like he wants to escape. Is it normal for him to do this? Abd is there any way to stop him? Because it's keeping me awake at night.

Also, could he actually naw through the bars while I'm asleep or something? I wouldn't want him to get out.

When my son was little he had a hamster. He said every night his hamster would gnaw the wires to it's cage. He never got out. Hamster teeth are always growing. You should get him something at the pet store so he can keep his teeth down.
Also get him a hamster ball. The kind you put them inside and they can run around the house. They can't escape. Can't get lost.
    Good luck!

He has this flavoured wood that he chews on and I give them to him in his cage.. but he doesn't touch them when he starts chewing the bars. It's good to know he can't get out, he's on a counter top so it would be bad for him to fall. He has a ball to run in, but he only is in that when I clean him out. Thanks for the info!

Hamsters are nocturnal, more active at night. Buy it some things that will keep him/her busy. They also need to chew on things to keep thier teeth from over growing. Get em some chew toys...they have some wood sticks and other stuff for them at the pet store. if the noise disturbs you put the hamsters cage in a different location at night.

As mentioned before there teeth are always growing and they need to keep them short so they chew. They sell block of wood at pet shores specifically for them to just chew up. If he still chews on the metal bars alot, maybe it'd be better for you to switch him to another cage. My sisters hampered used to chew on his bars occasionally. My cousin had a few hamsters tho n she had them in a fish tank with one of the screen covers on top, it may not be as interesting for you son not being able to see him crawl thru tubes n all that, but it will stop the chewing at night of it keeps your son up at night. Just make sure you get him some wood blocks to chew tho since he won't have the bars to grind his teeth down on then.

Dont worry its normal for rodents. They do it to sharpen their teeth.

My daughter has gerbils. They have blocks Timothy hay chewable huts but they still eat their cage. Ate a slide, a platform a little fake tv, two bowls. They love to chew. I also keep all my cardboard and throw it in there including toilet paper and paper towel rolls.

Like Tori says, rodents need to wear their teeth down. It's not an "escape" thing. It's just a natural thing. It's like us cutting our nails.
